re: Frustrated job applicant changes 1 letter on his resume, responses pour in

Studies on this topic have been done before. Identical resumes with only the first names changed get hugely different response rates. Susan gets many more calls for an interview than Shanika. James gets more calls than Jamarcus.
For those folks who don't believe it and even say that being a minority gives a job applicant an advantage, you should "minoritize" your name on your next resume to give yourself some help.
But before you do, talk to Australian business manager Kim O’Grady. Four months of sending resumes netted zero interviews. Then he put Mr. in front of his name. Two back to back interviews right away. Anecdotal, yes, but it happens.

Should have gone into law, Jose vs. Joe with the same stats, Jose wins every time.

José Zamora became Joe Zamora, and a week later, he says his inbox was full.
But were they full for Jose or Joe..? Maybe it just took a while for people to get back to him..
Also: Would you hire someone that knowingly "lied" on their resume ?

Maybe he didn't lie. Lots of people change their names, especially those who immigrate. It's not like he put he's a Rhodes scholar when he's a drop out.

then imagine what a guy with a name like Marquavious, Shaquavious, Rantavious, Markevious, Shattle, D'haquille,Le Sean, Amarlo, etc, gets for resume response. I bet those dont even get read.
Not fair, but what your name is does influence such things.

IDGAF about his problems.
He found a simple way to overcome them.
Assimilate. Legal immigrants have done it for years.
Good on him. Let him be an example.
The republicans on this board know good and goddamn well that multiculturalism doesn't work.
The liberal socialist found a placard for racism.
Convert or go home.

Why has nobody advocated taking names off resumes yet? This is obviously the only "fair" way to be completely non-biased!!!! Rabble rabble rabble!
I might have called him in for an interview, but I would have asked for a green card first

I believe the whole story is horse shite.
Possibly but even if his account is factual and assuming he's not an illegal immigrant, his circumstances is a result of 10+ million illegal immigrants within our borders. I can only assume that the businesses who did not consider his resume did not want to do extensive background checks/run the risk of hiring an illegal. However, around here, if he was in landscaping, construction, roofing, etc., he would have almost certainly been hired.

I would hire a Jose...they work for cheap

So what .
If a bigot won't bother looking at your resume because he makes assumptions about race (due to name) he is a bigot still & will probably hire someone else over you anyway . Unless you don't have to call nor show your face for an interview?
I have even heard the surname "Washington" carries racial significance & in many cases you are assumed to be Black .
Can always just name their kids Toby I guess?

Maybe he should stick to sending his resume to lawn care businesses...

Once they are in school or in a hospital (so maybe at a job too?) it is illegal to ask them if they are legal. Maybe people don't like to hire Mexicans bc they are mostly illegal.

For admission into law school? Yes.
Firm job? No.

As he explains in the video, "Joe" hadn't changed anything on his resume but that one letter. But what Zamora had done, effectively, was whitewash it.
RACIST!
Oh, and I don't buy this story for a second. Like, not even a little bit
