I'd think back around when half of the country couldn't read would be much worse. This person is greatly exaggerating.
It's easier to get by without knowing how to read in a manufacturing economy with shitty labor laws. Now that we're a service economy you have to be able to read.

How bout doing some teaching instead of posting on Facebook about how tough your job is.
If it is true that they can't read by 11th grade, then it's too late. The kid would need a tutor to learn that late. A teacher doesn't have time to teach reading with all these tests the students take in 11th grade.

Maybe they're talking about reading comprehension. Doesn't sound like you comprehend much.

well, at least she's not banging her students....or is she?

I don't remember knowing hardly anything until Kindergarten.
Now to get into schools your poor kid has to be tested in...I'm tutoring my 4 year old nightly on words and writing.

Unls dey meen texing lik dis.
Ignorant land apes mindlessly flailing their poop at the screen does not equal typing. This is egregious.

She probably is thats how she knows that the students text.

I picked up my stepson from school the other day and one kid kept on saying YOLO.

Also, this is why I set a rule at my house: for every hour spent playing video games, you have to read for 20 minutes.

IMO. this is where as a society we are making a huge mistake. If high school students can't be diligent with their curriculum and studies....
Then yes, they should be left behind. Have no chance at attending college or higher education. And should be forced into the labor or uneducated work force. frick all this, "No child left behind". It should be sink or swim. Bust your arse, be diligent with your education, or spend the rest of your life busting your arse at a shite job. Stop watering down the middle and lower class. Let there be a great divide in the classes of society. It's their own fault.
When it comes time for government aid later in their miserable lives. Make the acceptance even more difficult.

You can tell a huge difference in the ones that do.

I don't have kids. That seems fair, perhaps even pretty liberal (not saying it's bad).
Do your kids like reading?
I remember enjoying reading from at least late childhood, probably sooner. Not as much as video games, but that deal would have been a win win.

College was so much harder when you were in school, right? Nice, man.

Truth right here. I could write a dissertation on this with just personal experiences.

hmm - they can read, but they lack understanding. They don't have the capacity for complex thought. And they certainly cannot write.
I taught high school math for 12 years, mostly at the junior and senior levels, and found you had to be really careful in writing out instructions. And having a scientific background, I was pretty good at being precise in my writing. I found I had to include 'this does not mean ______" statement to guard against stupid interpretations.
However, when I asked them to perform a project and write their results in report form, it was really a useless endeavor. They just could not grasp the concepts of describing a process, presenting the data, and explaining conclusions. It was maddening.

What is the middle school curriculum like in katy, aside from the obvious atom splitting in week 1?

I think previous uniformity in classical education in college/universities made it more academically rigorous for sure. Now, even core courses can vary greatly by instructor/professor in many institutions.
So while some may get a broad education regarding American/European literature from a rather strict and demanding professor, your buddy may get a sleepwalk semester of some professor lecturing about his lifelong devotion to reconstructing Native American poetry.
