You obviously don't spend much time in Birmingham.

I lived there for 28 years. The most important question is... what is his line of work? Also, Birmingham is usually represented as the Greater Birmingham Metro Area which is well over 1 million in population (might be 1.5 now). It is very spread out with a nice population density and the full gamut of ghetto to millionare estates. Most people moving there, are actually going to live, work, and play in the suburbs. Cost of living is very nice and there are some very nice, very affordable neighborhoods in Shelby and St Clair County. I've lived all over the area and there's something for everyone except BIG city people (no car, all your friends live on your block, you pass 10 eateries on your way to your job 2 blocks away).

Alabaster/Helena, Vestavia, and parts of homewood are awesome places to live. I'd say bham gets a lot of shite for some reason, totally underrated city.
Well, none of the places you listed are in Birmingham.

What chain restaurants are downtown? Besides some fast food I can't really think of any. Mostly bars and stuff like Al's then nice restaurants like Ocean, Chez fon fon, etc.

There's a lot of good stuff in Bham. You're not going to know about it without living there.

Lots of people in here don't know as much about bham as they are claiming.

I've been to Birmingham numerous times, and I think it's a great place. It's really pretty, imo. Stayed with friends in Vestavia and Mountainbrook, and I was always impressed.

Depending on where he's moving from - it will probably be a huge upgrade.

Mountain Brook
Hoover
Pelham
Homewood
Trussville
Vestavia Hills

All are very good places to live and provide an easy, short commute to downtown Birmingham.

Downtown Birmingham and Avondale are going through a revival of sorts recently, a lot of things to do and new spots to hang out for younger people.

I like Birmingham more than Baton Rouge. I don't know if that helps

Technically, Jim N Nicks is.

Downtown Bham is changing.

I've heard this. With an old steel mill downtown I thought it was a pit. People who know it tell me I'm way wrong.

I moved to Homewood (just south of downtown B'ham) from Baton Rouge 10+ years ago. We love it here. Plenty to do, nice hills, ok food, good people (except the Auburn/AL stuff gets old).

It's worst parts are as bad as Detroit, and it's best parts are as good as Metairie with hills.

When and what part was full of bible thumpers and chain restaurants?

ETA: last year Zagat named Bham one of its fastest growing food cities.
