I was thinking about this very thing Saturday after my trolling motor got stuck in the down position on my 2016 year model bass boat. Then the jack plate quit working. It would be nice If I could lease a boat for three years, turn it in and get a new one. After a few years of ownership is when the BS starts.

consensus is that this is generally a really shitty idea

Don't go that far. It CAN be a great thing but only with the right people.

You've got to be able to separate business and friendship and treat the boat as business. Its no different than land, airplanes, apartment complexes whatever other expensive things that aren't conducive to a normal man's budget.

a friend of mine was explaining that he went in with 5 other guys for a nice cabin cruiser none could afford individually.
If none of them could afford the boat without going in as part of a 6 person split, then at least 1 or 2 of those 6 people won't be able to afford unexpected maintenance costs. Sounds like a recipe for ruined friendships

There are 2 things a man should never share, lend or borrow. A boat and pussy

I know people that do it with boats that cost 100k plus a year for things like captain, slip, maintenance. 15k to fill up with fuel right now.

If you have the week of the 4th of July this year you don’t get it the next year, but like other weeks individual partners can trade.

Sounds so nice and neat on paper…..

Until your holiday/weekend is the one that is fricked over due to weather, repairs, etc. Then you try to trade and nobody will budge.

my best friend and i financed a boat together. he got in to fishing years back and fell in love. We started talking about buying a boat together and it made perfect sense for us. We got the bayboat of our dreams, paid it off in four years, and it makes two families happier than shite. Hes the only person that id trust to do something like this and it worked out phenomenally for us.

I partnered in a boat with 2 other guys. We split everything 3 ways, including maintenance which was $300/mo. each and every month. That covered all ownership expenses until we sold it. We docked it less than a mile from 2 of our houses. We owned it for 7 years then decided to sell it for lack of use. It worked very well for us, but all 3 of us were VERY easy to get along with. KNOW YOUR PARTNERS BEFOR YOU JUMP IN. It can work if you are smart about it.

Maybe if a company is providing some sort of monthly or weekly maintenance. Cannot rely on other people for this. shite constantly breaks and needs maintenance on a boat. Like every time you use it.

WTF, have you ever had a boat? What would one do on weekly maintenance?

I've done this a few time (albeit with lower valued boats).

1. Weekly rotation.
2. Fill up boat at end of week.
3. Keep a spreadsheet with every expense and settle up at end of season.
4. All maintenance costs, repairs, etc., split between all owners (unless some type of negligence could be proved, but I've never had an issue with that).

I did it for over a decade with two different airplanes, and numerous partners, never had any real scheduling issues, over the long run it seems to work out. It is incredibly common for airplane ownership, so it is not just a pen and paper exercise .

I feel like sharing a boat to cruise around on the lake is a different transaction than sharing an airplane.

Heard of this for planes. You form a LLC with the vehicle as the asset.
X amount by in plus y amount a month in fees.
Then you use Acuity scheduler or similar to block off your times you want the craft.

I know 2 guys that I used to hang with that did that for a boat. 1 co-signed for the other and the they split the payments down the middle. Neither one of them took the boat out without the other.

But, one had got arrested and lost his job and the other guy was on the hook for the payments. They ended up having to sale it.

The only person outside of my household that I’d agree to that deal would be my mom or the father in law
