It's probably a multitude of things.
1. Finally getting the attention they wish they received while in high school.
2. The feeling of power to be the dominant one in a relationship and teaching someone.
3. As someone else said, insecurity.
4. Some other un-diagnosed psychological issue coming into play with any other option.
5. The thought/thrill of doing something taboo.
6. Perhaps having a partner that is eager to go and please, and can go more than a couple times in a session.
7. Ability to be in constant contact with students these days.
I'm sure other potential issues could be added, and none are mutually exclusive.
This is a thing that is legally, ethically, and socially wrong, but biologically is not all that "wrong," if both folks are sexually mature.
Edit to add: Added number 7. Also, people frick. People cheat. People cheat for different reasons. People tend to cheat with those with whom they have reliable access and interaction.

Anyway. As to the pathology... Always look towards the family first when you have men/women preying on younger people. Chances are likely high they were abused growing up.

The only thing smart phones did was to make it easier for these teachers to get caught. How many of these stories that get posted here include text messages as the damning evidence against the teacher? Probably 90%. back before text messages, there might be no proof of a sexual relationship beyond the kid's word, and it would have been pretty easy for a teacher to just say the kid was lying

Oh, damb, you people are so stoopid some times. What I'm saying is she probably likes to take pipe. She likes a young lean students look and it titillates her. She knows him from the classroom and they flirt. She sees the look of all those who like to titillate. You may be religious but they are all over the internet. You can come across that shite easily. I've seen a dozen posts on this board about favorite porn stars. There was a post of 12 to 15 or 20 pages a few days ago. The teacher thinks about the student and fantasizes. She snaps a suggestive pose that is not good enough. She snaps an even more suggestive photo and now she thinks she really looks as good as some of the porn stars. She texts, then sends the photo. A horny young student sees the photos, has the number and tells her the photo is GOOD. She is pleased at the adulation and she texts I'm here my hub is gone, come and get it. Can't you idiots see how quick this happens? There are volumes of those posts on this forum. It's wrong man don't get ME wrong.
