Ford ends Taurus production in Chicago as it prepares to launch new SUVs

The last of the full-size sedans rolled off the line at the automaker’s Chicago Assembly Plant on Friday as the latest casualty of Ford’s shift to a lineup comprised almost exclusively of utilities and trucks
They will build the new Explorer at the Chicago plant. The new Explorer actually looks nothing like a minivan and can be had with a 400 horsepower engine.

But the Taurus name will live on across the Pacific in China, where an all-new version debuted in 2015 and sedans are still popular…for now.
As for that last American-made one, Ford won’t be putting it in a museum. A company spokesman told Fox News Autos that it has been sold to a customer, but that the person’s name is not being released
Interesting factoid about the last 2006 Taurus (the first time Ford canceled this model).

Whether or not it ends up in display in a museum is yet to be seen, but the final 2006 model already is. The Atlanta-built car was purchased by Chick-fil-A founder Truett Cathy, who credited the lunch crowd from the Ford factory there with the early success of his restaurant and is among the collection of cars featured at the company’s headquarters

They bent a knee to Toyota in the car market.

OG Taurus SHO w/ Yamaha engine was pretty cool in its day.
Ecoboost Taurus was Meh.

They still make Tauruses?
My dad had one, a maroon station wagon back in the early 90s.
Real Dad car.

I've seen it in the lobby at CFA HQ. It is located right next to the original bat mobile. Looks completely out of place but still a cool gesture by Cathy.

Those second generation Taurus weren't bad. The '92 SHO was a pretty cool sedan when released. The Yamaha v-6 with manual transmission.

The Avalon isn't doing all that well either. For what the companies charge for full sized sedans, most buyers are getting something like an Acadia, Highlander, or Explorer instead.
And if we are being honest, the current generation Taurus is not a great product. It's a massive car that's somehow cramped on the inside and has horrible visibility. It's been in need of an update for a while as the Charger, Avalon, and Impala are all better.
I still like it, but it's not a great vehicle. Ford's own Fusion is a better car.

I’m surprised they aren’t keeping the fusion in the US market. Those things are everywhere.

Huge mistake IMO.
Chevrolet is keeping the Impala around an extra year, and they have no plans to get rid of the Malibu sedan even though they are halting production of the smaller Cruze.
Toyota, Nissan, and Honda are keeping their mid sized sedans around too.

My dad had a 1989 SHO. Jet black, Yamaha DOHC V6, the whole 9 yards. I learned how to drive a manual transmission in that car. Was incredibly fun to drive. I liked that you rarely EVER saw another SHO.

They killed any remaining goodwill from the SHO with this abortion.

I remember seeing that car in 1985 in Robocop and how “futuristic” it was for a cop car. Crazy how time flys by and how they were unable to keep up. Body wise, it’s almost a precursor to the Camry that came out in 1990.

Not shocking. Cheap arse plastic sedans.
This is what a Ford sedan should be like
