They won't be able to fire them because of the union; this is why unions are pieces of shite that should have gone away long ago. There are worker protection laws in place today, unions only function now is to protect those who should be fired or let go due to incompetence.

How they do it in a union plant is change job titles a little, furlow everyone, and make all workers reapply.
The plant still runs as people still have their jobs until the day HR and the supervisors finalize who they want to keep.
The ones that do not get a position are permanently reduced in force.
Easy to do right now with social distancing on assembly lines.
