Have they been running this turbo hybrid in Japan?
I think Toyota is the one rock solid brand everyone can agree on in regards to reliability.
I just have my doubts they’ll put out something that is anything other than reliable.

Just replace with a T66 turbo and throw in a MoTec system exhaust as well.

That’s pretty damned sharp. I hope they add Toyota to the list of approved vehicles for my company before I’m ready to trade in.

It will be reliable, for a turbo 4. The issue is with the complexity/heat of turbo'd engines. The ceiling for reliability is lower, no matter the brand.

Looks fantastic, especially in that light blue on that Limited. Great redesign

I like it if it's cheaper than the new Land Cruiser. I really don't like the air dam or the Turbo 4 cylinder motor that seems to only exist to meet Uncle Sam's emissions restrictions.
This one looks too gimmiky to me:
Trying to find a picture of one that's just a TRD Off Road (not the Pro). That was IMO the sweet spot in the 2010-2023 model.

ugly suv looks similar to an oversized bronco.

We had a 3.0 V6 sling a rod at 67k, perfectly maintained. Toyota does in fact have motors in its portfolio that are pretty bad.
They've had a lot of issues with the new 3.4L TT in the Tundra and Sequioa. Most have been resolved though, but any design with an electronic actuator operating the turbo waste gate is destined to be problematic. There's just too much heat right there for electronics to manage that.
The 5.7L V8 had some teething issues when it first came out too - as did the V6 engine in the 1990s 4Runner when first offered.
Toyota is not without issues, but they work pretty hard to correct them as quickly as possible. Most of their dealers are easy to work with too.
Their problem is that the 4.0L in the 2023 4Runner was damn near bulletproof though, and likely the most reliable engine you can buy right now because it's been on the market and unchanged for so long (the problems on the 2023 4Runner are widely known and pretty limited - rear main seal leak, some oil leaks from the valve cover gaskets, but all very rare).
So this new one has a lot to live up to. I like that it doesn't have an electronic waste gate actuator like the Tundra, but I'd still prefer the old V6. This turbo 4 Cylinder is very clearly a compliance engine with a lot of added complexity that consumers didn't really ask for.

Not as good looking at the Sequoia. A little disappointed.
Looks way better than that abomination IMO. They should redesign the Tundra and Sequioa immediately.

Also, glad they got rid of that UGLY roof rack on the Pro models.
That's nice. But they made the TRD Pro badges so much larger. That's not nice.
The TRD Off Road model is the only one I haven't seen, and the one that's most likely to be my favorite judging from the current gen 4Runner and the latest Tacoma. That's a nice package with all the hardware of the TRD Pro but without all the extra bull$hit you don't need or those black wheels and over fenders that clash with a lot of body colors.

If I was going to put faith in a brand, it's Toyota...I have/currently own several.
I'm just stating the obvious that any engine with a turbo and hybrid technology will require more maintenance. This especially coming from a proven NA V6 it had prior.

Typically the TRD Off Road Premium package is the best bang for your buck as you get all the offroad gadgets without the fluff shite.
I have a 2021 model with the TRD OR-P trim level. I'm pretty confident that I'll hang on to this truck for a very long time so long as it doesn't get wrecked, stolen, or flooded. They are very sturdy and I don't really put very many miles on mine. Its' a drab color that doesn't stand out, and that's how I like it. The paint job isn't as nice or as pretty as the Lexus version, but I don't really care enough about that to spend the extra $20,000 or so for the GX460.
IMO the TRD Off Road Premium and the SR5 Premium were the best values in the lineup for people who want a nice, reliable, traditional SUV but don't mind not having the latest and greatest tech. Hopefully Toyota didn't screw those particular trim levels up by loading them with features that nobody really wants. Automatic headlights and a bigger screen with better graphics would be nice, but that's not really a must have. The turbo motor is definitely not something 4Runner owners were really begging for.
So far I like what I see, but Toyota can easily screw this up by pricing it incorrectly or ditching the Off Road-Premium trim level. They are already taking a step back by canceling the reliable old V6 and moving to an exclusively turbocharged 4 cylinder lineup. I do like the switch to the 8 speed transmission and the increased towing capacity though - but not enough to trade in my current 4Runner.
In 10 years when these new 4Runners have proven themselves, I'll probably trade my 2021 model for a 2034 model. And that's if I don't decide to get a stripped down pickup truck from the local GMC dealer instead.

Gotcha.
I feel the same way with the faith in Toyota.

Toyota would do well by placing the turbo in a place where it can be easily swapped. They really, really screwed that "service-ability" aspect of the new Tundra design.
I haven't seen under the hood of the new Tacoma, but I imagine it will be the same. A small displacement 4 cylinder is probably much easier to configure in a way that can make service more DIY friendly.

Look under the hood of the new Tundra. Anyone accustomed to Toyotas or most domestic gasoline pickup trucks would get really nervous about what they see there. Plastic hose connectors, a fairly short twin turbo motor that is pushed way back into the firewall for some reason, spark plugs on the back two cylinders that are extremely difficult to reach with normal tools, and an even bigger spaghetti maze of coolant lines than most new vehicles.
I don't know if it was because their design process was truncated by the pandemic, but Toyota built that new Tundra in a way that will make it very labor intensive to repair as it ages.

That's encouraging. I guess even Toyota knows that they screwed up the Tundra if they have corrected the turbo design for other models.
They should not be making things more complicated than they absolutely have to be.
