"Back in the Day"? I think it was scarier because the narrative back then was a 100% death rate. You didn't know who had the Aids. Initially, it was homosexuals, then it expanded to IV drug users. There was a fear you could get it even by being near them. Fear of blood transfusions. Was it tainted if you needed it?
A lot's changed since then, but don't let anyone fool you. It was a scary time due to the unknown.

My father had emergency bypass surgery 86 or 87. AIDS was well established by then. My brother (a doc at the hospital) and I went to see him the day before surgery and ran into a pump profusionist (sp?) in the hallway who asked if we had donated blood, in case he needed it. My brother, who apparently knew the blood supply was suspect, just said, "No, there wasn't time." After we continued down the hall, I asked what that was all about? I thought the blood supply was safe. He said we think it's safe.
Dad died of lung cancer in 2008 that he earned in the Korean War smoking 4 packs a day. He quit when we were kids, about 1968, but maybe he should have quit sooner. Or maybe smoking had nothing to do with it.

Oh, yeah. Around 1980 you had people worried that mosquitos could transmit AIDS. Seriously.
I also remember people being nervous about drinking the wine (aka - the blood of Christ) with communion.

We'd already been through the Herpes Simplex 2 scare, so it was easy to deal with. Smart people, who hadn't been infected with anything, were already protecting themselves.

I was working in a Blood Bank and it was very scary. Hepatitis was our worry then.

We had AIDS patients come to our middle school and tell us not to frick around. There was a panic but it was an entirely different kind of “social distancing” encouraged.
Also, this hit homosexuals, drug users, and ethnic minorities harder than anybody. Plus, for vaginal intercourse the male-to-female transmission mechanism is more viable to spread the disease than the other way around.

I also remember telling people 'What's the first sign of HIV? A severe pounding sensation in your arse...'
Then Magic got it but would never die, and people developed all these drugs that would keep it at bay. And just like that, it faded away.
