My brother had been out here for a year before I moved. Finding a house or an apartment here is a real pain, so having him here to look at places was a major plus.

My daughter had just graduated college and it seemed like a great time to make a move like this. I didn't have a job lined up but it's really easy to find work here.

The PNW is beautiful, the weather is great(if you don't mind snow) the people are friendly, but the food is garbage compared to the South. Living in a state where weed is legal is everything I ever hoped it would be, though.

Moved to TX for work, truthfully could not find a job in Louisiana (El Gaucho style). Job in Houston basically retired me at 40. Moved to TN where my family resides and we just do real estate now.

Do not stay in Louisiana unless you are a good old boy with good connections. The grass is greener.

Wifey got job in Little Rock. She stayed in apartment while I looked for job up there and got La house ready to sell. Wife scouted out acceptable new home in the meantime. I got job up there. Sold La home bought Ar home and moved. Did it just before Christmas and every day I'm more convinced we did the right thing. Did it with two kids under fifteen too. There were a few more details but that's the gist of it. Never believe it's impossible.

Did exactly that - an objective analysis across the country considering a bunch of different factors: cost of living, landscape, weather, proximity to other things, crime, school system, close to an airport (for work), like-minded sane folks. It was fun. Lots of pros and cons, we looked from Raleigh to Boise and ended up south of Nashville. I had a spreadsheet of course. No family here, but we're 9 hours away. No regrets at all. The only thing on the "stay in LA" side of the ledger was family, and it just wasn't enough. I have watched my parents, my sisters, and other family members stay in shitholes just because other family is there - it's a self-fulfilling prophecy, and the people who suffer are your kids. It's selfish and self-destructive all at the same time, I cannot make sense of it when others do that. Our kids are getting so much more out of where they live than we would have if we tried to continue fighting all that was wrong and sucked (and cost a shite ton more) being in BR. No, it doesn't guarantee we'll live longer or all turn out perfect, but it sure it a lot more enjoyable in so many ways.

What I did:

1) Identify 3-4 suitable cities/areas, based on your occupation’s salary, cost of living, pubic school quality (if you have kids), QOL, local airport (hub or need for connection flight) if you travel a lot
2) Apply for jobs/interview for jobs (interviews were in person, so we always stayed an extra two days or so after interviewing to check out the city/area).

People are hiring everywhere. I would make sure I had a job before I moved, if I were you. Make your job opportunity by applying for jobs,

What research did you do to narrow down your choices

I always look at demographics, median household income, and percentage of students with free lunches. Those are excellent indicators on the culture of an area.

1997 May 5am on a Sunday.
Had had it in BR packed up my Silverado
Went to I-12 and O’Neal Lane
Heads east, tails west
Tails. Drove all the way to Phoenix. Rented a 3 month studio, slept a night. Job in a medical supply warehouse the first morning looking. Drove the deliveries at week 3. 12 weeks I was promoted to sales rep and given a territory in Las Vegas… I could write a book on the crazy times and turns.
What was the question? No. No research. Zero f$&ks given. Do the adventure my friend!

All bs aside, I talked to a guy yesterday that did this.

How do you like Des Moines?

I could never get the wife to do it but I could easily live in the Midwest.

Franklin, TN is on virtually every list of top places to live. Maryville, TN if you want to live in east TN.

As far as logistics, we came up here with about $1500, a broken jeep, no jobs, and a lot of debt. We sold most of our shite. We didn't have kids so that was good. We are now out of debt, I lost 60 pounds, got my degree, took care of our mental health issues, and are just generally a lot happier.

Gotdamm, this place can be awesome. Sometimes. This is one of them.

SLC has a great job market, good airport, and plenty of things to do. I’d move there today if I could.

We are full around here so no need to move out here

To answer the op, I wanted a mountain climate instead of the brutal humidity in the south. The weather here is amazing.

New Hampshire is the nicest state in the North East.

I would choose the mountain west though.

I moved to Texas and knew nobody there. Figured I'd land on my feel due to a strong job market, which I did. Now going on 25 years, never looked back or had any regrets.
