For those of you who get/had panic attacks, how do you deal with it?

I have had 4 panic attacks throughout my adult life, with the most recent two occurring relatively close together in time. Woke up to one in the middle of the night last night and it was a dreadful experience. When I was a kid I would occasionally feel very mild panic attacks coming on but could easily control my thoughts to prevent them from happening. Now it takes awhile to snap out of that shite. Anything I should look into? Don’t want to take any drugs.

Had sex, went to sleep and a few hours later I felt like my time on Earth was coming to an end

I’d think weed would help.
Never had one.

Seriously look in to theanine. I know you said you don't want drugs (I refuse to take xanax or other benzos, too), but it is an herbal extract that works very, very well, at least for me.

Honestly, the best way to get through it is to think about the times that it's happened before. Realize that if you got through that one, then you can get through this one.

I took myself off Xanax, scared me how much I liked it and how useless I was when taking it.
To cope, I try to do some form of cardio a few times per week, as lack of sleep adds to the GAD. One small drink if you aren't prone to addiction can help.
In a work setting where most methods are not possible, I usually walk out of my office and make some sort of lap around the building. Physically removing yourself from the current setting can do wonders, as changing mindsets is much easier that way.
Meditation and breathing techniques also work when physically restrained, like in a vehicle or plane. These take practice to be effective quick enough to make an impact.
Good luck.
I smoke pot after the family is sleeping some nights too. That is the ultimate.
CBD tincture worked for me as well. Some people get no results so your mileage may vary.

It is very much an individual thing. Nothing worked for me with paralyzing panic attacks coupled with depression until I got on Xanax. The advice here to avoid this, if possible, is good. It is very easily abused and dependency is part of it. I’ve been on it for many years and have never taken more than the prescribed dosage.

Besides dependency issues, to be honest, I'm scared shitless of having a psychiatric disorder on my file that could be used to confiscate my firearms or my ability to purchase them.

I’m long past NOT having that.

Meditation
This has worked well for me in controlling and redirecting my thoughts in more positive and productive ways.
I don't do the sort where you spend hours trying to find higher consciousness. 5-10 min of relaxing and focusing on how I can turn negative thought patterns into positive ones at work, home and with my health does it better for me.
