re: For those of you old enough to remember, how does this situation compare to 9/11

I remember where I was and who I was talking to when it happened.
911 was an event, it happened and was over. This continues to unfold.
Also, for 911 we could blame someone/something. We could assign responsibility(generally, as time went on, more specifically). This virus isn't malicious and want to inflict damage to us, it's just a virus. Created by nature and doing what it is designed to do.
Leaves us nothing to blame. We are left holding our varied emotions with nowhere to direct them.
If that makes any sense.

This pales in comparison to 9/11. The death toll will be higher, for certain, but the act those sorry pieces of shite committed instilled real fear in all of us. Covid is bothersome, but 9/11 was frightening and, personally, it pissed me off. I like having nothing to do but hang out with my family and it hasn’t effected me personally, so this hasn’t been bad.

We have already surpassed in America alone the number of Americans who died in the Iraq War. By today, we will have surpassed the number of deaths in both the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. By Friday, I submit we will have lost more people who actually died on 9/11, plus those two wars.

We lost 750,000 people in the Civil War. I submit that we still in America as a whole feel the reverberations of that War.

We lost over 400,000 Americans in WWII. While the memory of that war is fading fast with our Millennials and Gen Z’ers, we are the America that we are today solely because of the outcome of that war.

We lost over 100,000 Americans in WWI, and while that is a forgotten war, modern warfare tactics were born during that War.

I was living in Baton Rouge on 9/11. My Grandad was a WWII hero and was living at that time. Classes were cancelled, Exxon was on lockdown and Governor Foster was in constant communication with President Bush then. The fear was that the next wave would come by ship in either New Orleans or Baton Rouge. The shock was quick, painful, and totally out of left field.

Before 9/11 I didn’t have any idea who AQ or OBL or ISIS let alone the Taliban. I could not have told you if Iraq was East or West of Iran then. As far as I knew, Afghanistan was some shithole place still run by the Russians. I had no idea and didn’t care. I didn’t know one single person directly affected by 9/11, yet I mourned first weeks.

This is different. If you will excuse the metaphor, but the towers are still falling down. The only difference is that we knew they were coming, we see it coming, and we are all trying to brace ourselves. It does have more of a Katrina feel to it than 9/11.

Regretfully, with all of our modern technology, we might lose American civilians in numbers between WWI and WWII war dead within a month or two is staggering. And that’s just in the USA. We are likely to lose 1/2 Billion people worldwide when this is done.

Additionally, despite what economists say about the 1929 stock crash, it didn’t just happen in one day. It did crash in ‘29, but that event ushered in the Great Depression.

What we are facing is on a GLOBAL scale both in loss of lives and in our economics. The Greet Depression was a global issue the likes of which coupled with WWI literally left a vacuum that ultimately caused WWII. Yet it took WWII to get the world out of the Great Depression.

So we are technically suffering WWI-WWII death numbers during the midst of what could be the Second Great Depression.

I mean no disrespect to anyone effected by 9/11 God Bless you all, but yeah, I think this a pretty big deal.

9/11 certainly changed everything but the country went back to work immediately after.

This nonsense of shutting down the world economy for an indefinite period of time will have some lasting financial effects for a great many people.

9/11 was a life defining event. I still get emotional to this day watching those scumbags fly into the towers.

911 was not scary. it was on tv 3000 miles away.
my daughter was at transamerica building and there was media concern it was local target. some plane not responding.
it was cleared up.
by noon our time she was at home so no sweat.

cv19 is more interesting because im 77 with a comorbitity.

if i get it, im dead.

im prepared emotionally and spiritually but my family is in denial.

thats a pain in the arse.
plus i was looking forward to the buddhist end of life rituals that wont happen.
on my own.

my housemate is fragile.
she'll probably die too.

The death toll will be far greater than 9/11 but this doesn’t have the feel of 9/11 at all in my opinion.

9/11 was such a shock to everyone. I was still on an emotional high from my first blowjob in high school and then BAM — we were at war with an unknown enemy (at the time).

Watching the planes fly into those buildings was tragic. Everyone was wondering how many would survive and escape. Then the towers fell and the world stopped. The pentagon was hit and partially collapsed. Another plane went down in Pennsylvania. 9/11 just seemed like it was one major event after another with each killing a large number of people.

There was no treatment available to stop it or slow it down. We didn’t know if it was over or if there would be follow up attacks. People wondered if the terrorists had nuclear weapons at their disposal, which made things more scary. This pandemic is major and will kill more but from a “how it feels” standpoint, it comes nowhere near 9/11 for me.
