[quote]Just think. They'd never turn a profit if the government didn't subsidize their work force with benefits. frick Walmart. Pay your workers living wages and let them work more than 39 hours so tax payers don't have to pick up their insurance, etc.[/quote
Do you actually believe this stupidity? If so, you are an idiot.

Do walmart employees go to college lol
Obviously some do. But your average Costco employee hasn't. And they are not on welfare.

Walmart also saves a ton of money by paying women much less than men.
Then why do they hire men?

Starting pay at Walmart and Costco are similar. In fact, when Walmart was here it was equal. The local McDonald's pays a better starting wage than costco
Starting wage at Costco is $11.50 an hour, and the average is $21 an hour

It's a good business model, but they're playing a different game than what you think of as Walmart, otherwise WMT wouldn't have Sam's.
The customer to which they cater their business is different; the products are different; the pricing is different. So on and so forth.
Eliminating a Walmart-like option because of some misguided moral crusade wouldn't help the Costco's of the world very much (or turn Walmart into Costco, especially as they already have Sam's). It's a bougie, "we know better than you" worldview that largely drives that. The firm that would be most helped by cutting Walmart at the knees would be Dollar General.
You're essentially eliminating choice in pricing and convenience for a pretty large segment of the population just because a company make you feel bad in your fuzzies. Then again, we could go the way of large sections of the rest of the developed world and raise MW to ridiculous levels and have high unemployment and shitty PPP of the dollar and terrible growth and little innovation. It's not a coincidence that the closest OECD countries in MW to the U.S. considering exchange rates and PPP - Germany, Canada, UK - have similar growth and unemployment as we do.

As opposed to Amazon who employs no one locally?

Jeff, where will the money come from to raise the wages of all Walmart employees?

One thing they don't mention is a LARGE portion of the inventory in walmart stores is there on consignment (for lack of a better word). Walmart does not pay the mfg/distributor for it until in scans thru a register. If one of those items is stolen the mfg takes the loss not walmart. If you are a mfg on this program you have special software that you can use to view the sales of your items in real time. When one is rung up you can see it in your office.
Walmart also is slow to pay mfg. Often taking over 90 days, regardless if negotiated terms are 30 , 60 or 90.

So you're saying Apple is run much more efficiently than Walmart is?

quote:Simply not true. Walmart pays for the product up front and then does chargebacks for returns, defective, price drop allowances, etc to the suppliers.

I don't "hate" on Walmart. I simply do not shop there, because they are usually all filthy as frick, the "help" is basically non-existent, and the good folks who seem to shop there regularly are, well...terrible.
Other than that, yeah...

You can deny all you like but I know whats true.

Consignment is real and it's usually a win win. In manufacturing or large retail, the mfg of vitals or stock items gets in a facility to sell their goods,
and the facility owners don't have to pay for it (huge difference in accounting for Inventory) until it's sold.
I agree with you Bing. I did NOT realize that about shrinkage(theft). I would have assumed that the stolen items were 'consumed' by Walmart. Interesting as hell.

Isn't that breaking the law in regard to taxes? You're not paying your fair share! Or are you saying that the tax code is too complex and too many loopholes are present that give privileged individuals a further advantage over the poor?

quote:There are very few suppliers set up on consignment, very few. I work in financial services and literally deal with Walmart on a daily basis including logging into their system. We also work with their vendors and suppliers directly and have been doing so for over a decade. I know EXACTLY how they operate. As I said, some are set up the way you described especially those that sell on walmart.com but the vast majority of the in-store products are not consignment.

PS - you are also somewhat correct about the slow payments but lots of variables go into that. Lots of vendors are paid within days of invoice especially if there's a net discount for early pay.
