For this of you that got a Covid vaccine - how did you evaluate personal risk?

Namely the risk of infection vs risk of complication from a vaccine. As much as people encourage you to vaccinate or not, it’s really your responsibility to weigh the potential risk of a complication from the vaccine against the risk of being hospitalized with the virus (or transmitting it to someone more vulnerable).

I’m assuming most of you are over 30 with parents in their 60s or 70s.

It’s a far easier decision if you are a very healthy 18 year old or a 60 year old smoker with diabetes. I am assuming most of this board fits into that age group that’s too young to dismiss the virus entirely, but also too old to not be concerned with it at all.

What made you decide that it was worth getting vaccinated?

Or if you didn’t vaccinate, is it because you are just not concerned about Covid personally? Or were you just skeptical about a new vaccine?

1) I don't like getting sick, so anything to help me not get sick is a positive to me

2) I actually ended up getting COVID before I was able to get vaccinated, and COVID fricking sucked, so I'll be getting vaccinated soon because anything that will help me NOT get COVID again is a positive to me

statistical outliers are not relevant to me, so I don't really consider them a risk

I waited to kind of see how the different ones reacted to close family, kind of like they were Guinea pigs.

And I have a very close friend that I watched almost die from it. It honestly scared me. And he's a fit, non-smoker, non-drinker, health nut.

mRNA breaks down fast, the infection risk is so small I'm not concerned, and currently living with two 70+ year olds in the house.

Pretty straightforward for me to get it, despite being in my early 30s with zero underlying conditions.

I'm in my 30s, very active, maybe 16-18% bodyfat so I'm not walmart obese. I do drink a good bit. I had covid and thought it was a bad hangover until I lost my sense of smell. I tested positive for the antibodies a couple months later. I had gotten exposed earlier in the year and I had to take a couple of weeks off, ended up missing some planned destination hunting trips because of it. My employer came out with a policy that if you're vaxxed you don't have to miss work if exposed or minor symptoms. No brainer for me, I don't want to have to take unplanned vacation again.

I'm 27 and healthy but I like running and I wanted to avoid any kind of lingering respiratory effects. Plus I have some high risk family members. So I got the vaccine.

This. Plus I don’t want to inconvenience my coworkers who would have to cover for me.

My brother got Covid and almost died. He’s 37 and healthy as a horse too.

I’m overweight and have a heart condition, seemed to me those were the highest predictors of death via covid so I decided to get it.

Reinfection is extremely rare, but to each their own. Adverse side effects of vaccination are vastly unreported.

I see a lot of vastly overestimating the vaccine risk and underestimating the risk from Covid around these parts

I'm 50 with a dad bod (OT extremely obese), with hypertension. I go the vaccine because I would like to work without a fricking mask.

Three teen children will not get vaccination this time around. Will evaluate that at a later date.

Agreed, two old friends close to the family caught and died. Multiple college friends in excellent shape caught it and were severely impacted. Some with recurring issues even months later. I have aging parents and in-laws. Conversation with my family doc and discernment over watching others react/not react to the vaccine. Decided on Pfizer. No real issues except a few chills and headache, nothing 1 Tylenol couldn’t handle.

I’m not an anti vaxxer and people who are end up being typically weirdos with no substantial evidence or reason for their belief. Until now they were usually liberals in Oregon, now they are Q supporters in all parts of the country. Neither group is one that has any logic about them. I’ve yet to see any real evidence that the vaccine is bad for me specifically compared to other vaccines. So instead of listening to your hunting buddy from Denham on medical advice maybe change your source of knowledge.

And kinda like your views on religion and sexuality keep it to yourself because nobody else cares that you’re not getting that lethal injection.

My heart is already enlarged and weak because of another viral infection I had in the past - likely flu or some other virus. That means that at any given moment I’m more likely to experience sudden cardiac failure than many others out there. I have two young children and a beautiful wife that could get another man to marry her fast if I die. I figured I should at least TRY to lessen the potential seriousness I would be sure to experience if I were to catch covid.

For me, in my situation, not getting the shot was equal to me not giving a frick if my children grow up without their dad.

The first Pfizer shot didn’t do shite to me but the second one made me sick for two days. That was back in March. I just went to the cardiologist Tuesday and my heart isn’t any worse than it was before getting the shot.

This too! Even in some mild cases people were sidelined for weeks with lingering respiratory issues. I enjoy running and cycling too much to miss several weeks of it.

I talked to 3 doctors I know, including a family member, and they all said the Pfizer and Moderna were safe, but they weren't sold on the J&J one. And I wanted to get back to going to concerts and doing things without a mask. So I got the Pfizer as soon as I was eligible.

You can still get it and transmit it after the vaccine. It just reduces the symptoms. No healthy person should get it because of grandma and grandpa.
