I've been hearing about their "plight" since I was a kid and that was over 30 years ago. They are the poster child for why unions suck and they are never happy. They hold the city hostage and have grossly mismanaged retirement monies yet they complain that retirees aren't being paid. What am I missing here?

They also get paid like, $18,000 a year.

You want to do it and get shite on for that much money? By all means, join them.

I used to love when Chief William McCrossen would appear on the NOLA tv news and talk about a fire. Great voice. RIP.

They make way more than that with overtime, mileage and state supplemental pay. They also have insane retirement benefits which is why they're in the position they're in now. Too many people retiring and not enough money to pay them.

You should probably look into why they are constantly bitching before laughing at them. They get paid shite and have been shafted for years, and years, and years, and years with the BBC every chance they get. All the while, you've gotten your fires' put out. Direct this kind of rhetoric towards the S&WB.

I can't imagine why anybody would ever be upset to find themselves in that situation.

City also agreed to pay them last year and haven't paid them. The situation sucks overall for everyone because it was the previous administrations that refused to address the pension fund issues.

I think you've been hearing about it for 30 years because the city has been appealing the ruling for that long. Those fireman are still bitching about the same singlular issue that the city won't settle. Like 8 administration's have kept up this fight. The city made promises to stem the flight to other cities and doesn't want to pay. They offer pennies on the dollar, to be paid after most initial fireman will be long dead. The pension is a total other issue. Because they suck at investing money, they don't deserve an unrelated claim that they've sued for and won... A bunch of times? Full didclosure: my dad was a no fireman for a bunch of yrars

The firefighters board voted they're own generous pension stimulus. They basically drained their account then went to the city for more and got it through the legislature and board where firefighters held the majority seats. It's all one big crooked arse swindle.

As for the comment on SW&B. That is the single most corrupt office in this entire state by a landslide.

I hope that should you ever need them they show up, do their job and then you can ask them in person just what they're bitching about.

I respect what they do, but they chose their profession. It's like teachers bitching 24/7 about everything possible about their job

Hey ya don't like it, find something else.

This NOFD issue has been going on for longer than I'm alive(I'm over 40). My understanding has always been that there's some blame to go around for initial mismanagement for all parties involved. I'm no expert here but NOFD f'ed up and the city has robbed them many times after that. The city has put this off to the next administration long enough that interest charges insure that no one could ever make it right. Please correct me if I'm wrong but the NOFD has right reason to be pissed...

Ridiculous counter. No one made them become firefighters. In fact, it's pretty tough to join so there must be some things good about the job. They've changed the game multiple times and there was never anything the city could do about it. They changed retirement age, % one can claim, etc. The city had to just cut checks to the point that it's the biggest allotment in the city's budget.

Yeah man, if you're against inflated and outrageous pension you must be in favor of children burning to death.

Why are people in favor of children burning to death????

With that face and that accent, he was straight out of central casting. And Joe Giarusso as the Police Commissioner.
