So why even go? Doesn't sound like much fun. I had a couple's trip planned there in September, but we're cancelling now and finding somewhere else to go. Only time I'd feel good about going there is when its below freezing out so the dindu's don't feel like committing crime.

I mean, just be smart, and carry.

It is legal to shoot and kill people who threaten your life in Louisiana.

I'll admit, I probably deserved to have gotten held up more times than none with my drunk arse walking around the Quarter and warehouse district at all hours of the night/mornings.

There were a lot of mornings i woke up thinking to myself if I was a TPOS I would have robbed me

Right but it seems the level of violence has increased, i've only lived here in 2012, but a lot of these attacks are more viscous than what happened to me. I had a gun pulled on me and he said something to the effect of give me everything you have and i reached in and threw my wallet on the ground did a 180 and start busting it back to where some people were.

These days it just feels like there is a larger level of animosity and violence in the incidents - as well as a disregard for life - maybe its the way they are reported but its just the feeling i get.

And it those sort of feelings start to permeate your daily life if you live here. I live off west end and even get an uneasy feeling when walking my dogs at night - although that is admittedly an overreaction.

I work downtown - I no longer work past 7:00, only park on the surface lots and even still get an uneasy feeling on the back of my neck if I get downtown before the sun is up on occasion (i can't sleep when stressed and work on lots of hard deadlines).

I have said here many times that I have lived in New Orleans many many years and I have never been a victim of any crime and I do not personally know anybody that had has been effected by any crime in NOLA.

That is pretty incredible. I'm assuming "many many" has got to be 10-15+ years? I mean its a city, crime happens.

I'm not really in the "warzone" camp, but I know of at least 3 people off the top of my head that have been victims of armed robbery/muggings. Two were uptown, magazine and maple, and happened to girls.

Chicago is much closer to being a cleaner New York than it is to being a cleaner New Orleans.

I meant in the general tone and mood of the city. It reminded me of the party atmosphere that New Orleans exudes (especially around Bourbon St). The whole area around Wrigley Field on Saturday for a Cubs game was very reminiscent of New Orleans without the culture.

I highly recommend a summer time trip to Chicago. Just stay on the north side.

I've always been a big champion of getting friends and people to come visit, to come be a tourist, to come enjoy New Orleans.

Good for you seeing the light that New Orleans is a shite hole.

I lived there for 30 years and haven't been murdered. I'm probably an anomaly though

Thought you lived in Gretna. Those folks scared of the police chief's tank he keeps parked outside the station, I'm guessing, and keep the shite in Orleans.

I've lived here my whole life and I'm pretty much the same. My mom's car was stolen (in Metry) 20 or 25 years ago, and I've had two bikes stolen by tpos homeless guys. And years ago some guy stole a check from my dad and wrote himself a $50 check to cash.

Otherwise I can't think of any crimes that have happened to me, my family, or my close friends. I feel such a weird disconnect reading all the crime stats, because it's so completely distinct from my personal experience.

Another thing to consider, that I dont think anyone has really touched on, is that these punks go back to their area and tell all their buddies what they got away with, or word gets out to other NO thugs that they can do this to tourists and get away with it....and it encourages more and more of this. "Hey, mane...jus go in a pack of 3 of 4, no one'll check you." The lack of concern by the "leaders" and LEOs is what will push this city over the edge.

The wife and I just spent a weekend in Chicago. I'm not sure where they hide the gangland violence, but it wasn't anywhere we went.

It's miles and miles from the heart of the city. Nowhere near the downtown, touristy or business areas. My parents sort of freaked at first when I moved there, but after a couple visits and looking at the map where the Southside is located, they were much relieved. The Southside and Westside of Chi is about like the majority of the city of Nola in terms of nowhere feels super safe from crime.

If Ray Nagin and family wouldn't have completely robbed the city blind on the crime cameras, we could have possibly been a model for them. They were absolutely well funded and we were ahead of the curve in it all and cutting edge if I remember right back in the late nineties and early two thousands..... but the was robbed blind i think the cameras that were fully funded but never even came on line or worked was in the single digits percentage wise. Bwahahaha at this city
We could have been an example when it came to camera policing.

I did read recently that they were flirting with finally installing the gun shot detector all over he city that pick up, pin point, and log any gun shots. I think it would be great for us and may help with response times and cut down on police hours. I remember seeing this used in some cities in the Midwest and it seemed very accurate and useful.

Probably. If you have some numbers to change my mind, I'm open to them. So many people come to the city everyday, it would take a lot of tourists having issues to make up up 0.01

Is it more or less dangerous than other tourist destinations? How much more dangerous is it?

It's unique enough that people put up with a slightly higher risk of being criminalized, but at the margins, the perception that it is more than slightly more dangerous will keep people from going.

It's a rational response.
