Probably because the people that harp on NOAL make shite up and pass it off as fact.
No one denies that there is a problem. Literally no one. Yet that is one of the standard responses to anyone that even slightly takes yup for the city in threads like these.

I don't know why, but most people in this state cannot accept criticism of any kind
This right here is BS.

Definitely helps understand why this place wallows in its state of mediocracy or worse.
No, but the shitty fricking mayor and crappy administration sure do have a lot to do with it, as well as the shitty people that vote these idiots in continually.

but they won't. The strange thing about the NOLA loyalists- and the whole state of Louisiana for that matter- is that no matter what the nature of the criticism, they all go into defensive mode. Definitely helps understand why this place wallows in its state of mediocracy or worse.
I think a lot of people who live here will readily admit this place has problems. However, two things.
1) The vast majority of criticism not only comes from people who have never set foot in the city, or haven't in decades, but the criticism is way, way, way over the top. Read this thread... many people truly believe every person in the city is attacked every day. It's one thing to criticize, but let's at least keep the hyperbole down a little bit.
2) A lot of the criticism are of things that people don't care about. People who live here aren't living here cause they want to be super wealthy, they want to make a decent income and enjoy all the other things this area offers. They want to be close to family (a Southwest flight away is NOT close to family).
So railing on and on about how you can make more money in Houston or Dallas is stupid. Everyone knows you can. We choose to place importance in other things that we would not have in Houston or Dallas.

Look I have had a gun put in my ribs and told that I was going to lose my life if I didn't hand over my wallet. I have a friend's brother who was taken to an ATM while the frickers kept his wife at home. They returned home and shot him dead with a shotgun in front of his wife. So I hope you can see where I am coming from..
I'm really sorry that happened to you and your friends...thats really terrible and I dont blame you for not wanting to live in the City, however, that is not the norm for most people that live or visit new orleans and are not raised in the ghetto and dont sell drugs.

How so? I can leave Tampa, Ft Lauderale, Atlanta at 5:30 am and be home for breakfast.
Now, your west coast and northeast cities, that's not as feasible, but still can be done.

"Hey mom, can you come watch my kids tonight while me and my wife take advantage of these tickets we just got given to us?"
Mom doesn't have the ability to hop on Southwest last minute to fly in.
Mom doesn't have the ability to fly to Tampa, Atlanta, etc to come to each of my daughter's softball games. She can drive the 20 min to come to the ones here.

Why do you think people make up stories about crimes? Ha if someone tells me that they got mugged in New Orleans I am going to believe them...Why not it happens more times in one day than I have toes and fingers. I would love nothing more then for New Orleans to get the crime under control. I don't hate New Orleans I just hate the way it is out of control!

no it doesnt...you just made that stat up...there are not more than 20 muggings a day in New Orleans.....
Why are you making stories up?

I love it how everyone acts like there is no crime against tourists anywhere except New Orleans:
NYC
Dallas
Houston
Chicago Tourism Crime
Here are but a few links about stories in "safe" cities mentioned in this thread.

I didn't say that. But to say there isn't a great amount of hyperbole and BS that tries to get passed off as fact in these threads is just laughable.
I'm not saying your specific story is made up btw.

My cousin was stabbed 5x by a white guy on Bourbon Street in front of Razzoo's about 10yrs ago. He lived to tell about it but I don't think they ever caught the guy. He's always been a dick, and I think he was hitting on the guys girlfriend, so I'm certain that he had it coming.

The ten fingers and ten toes is old saying. Its meaning is that something happens a lot. I didn't mean for you to take it literally.

No matter what saying or anecdote you use, you can't honestly say tourists are stabbed/shot/mugged "a lot".
That's the point.

Where did I say tourist? I was talking general crime in New Orleans.

then use accurate facts if you going to make certain accusations.

You're a good friend for caring about their safety.

People make this accusation all the time, but it's patently untrue. Nobody in this thread is saying NO has no crime problem, or that the current state of affairs is acceptable. They are (accurately) responding to the unhinged redneck ranting that everyone in New Orleans is shot at every day or that you should never come here for any reason.

What's a lot? Tell me how many people are getting mugged every day in New Orleans since you seem to have some hard evidence that it happens a lot

Millions of people across this country are raising self sufficient and productive children without grandparents at arms length.
