The fascination you people have with that place amazes me.

It's Memphis or St. Louis with better food...

There are so, so many better places in the US to visit. Lots of places that were barely a speck on the map some 20 years ago (Austin, Nashville, Denver, Portland) have surpassed New Orleans like it isn't anyone's business.

Huh?

If anything this proves that it's near impossible to get away with this crap

There are cameras everywhere

And what is that going to do? Oh 4 black males in hoodies, age range 17-37. And?? Those cameras contributed nothing in terms of descriptors that would help in catching them. Which is even worse, now they know even with cameras up today, they still won't get caught.

I'm involved with a group that puts on a conference every summer for young professionals. The conference rotates between NOLA, Vegas, and a third city that varies. It's back in NOLA this summer.

The people that come to this conference generally are between age 30-40 and are successful. They also like to go out and have a good time.

I will tell them the same thing I told them three years ago, last time it was here, and it's the same thing I tell anyone visiting.

1) Stay on the main streets. Stay in very well lit areas.

2) Never go alone, and if you can help it, never go just with two people. Have at least three people go. The more the better.

3) Never take a drink from anyone on the street. Get your drinks from a bar.

4) Bring only the cash you think you will need, one credit card if you need it, your ID, and your phone. Guys, put your wallet and phone in your front pocket. Ladies, if you can, keep the purse at home. Screw bringing makeup, you will be fine. If you can, get a guy in your group to hold your stuff in his pockets.

5) Keep control of yourself. Have fun, but don't drink so much that you lose control of your environment. To the extent you can, don't look like a drunken tourist.

On the night that those two muggings occured, which are horrible and can not be defended or ignored, thousands of people went out and had a great, trouble-free time in the city. Let's not forget that.

Yet, these muggings and shootings happen every night (every weekend at least).

Fricking-A man, there was a stint where thugs were busting in upscale restaurants and robbing the patrons and staff blind. You can't make this shite up. It's like a freaking movie!

They ruthlessly murder a Brinks delivery driver. For the love of God, they even freaking murder an innocent pizza delivery driver! Over what? $20 and a 1990 Corolla? New Orleans has some bad shite going on right now...

This is the key. Cities keep that shite at bay. Naked city in Vegas knows better than to go on the strip or Viper will be on their arse. Nola just lets them come in to the tourist area and do what they want.

No they don't.

How many more times were there besides the two that II'm remembering currently?

The holdup of Patois, on Aug. 20, would be only the first of three armed robberies of bars and restaurants in well-to-do parts of Uptown New Orleans. A little before 10 p.m. on Sept 24, two men dressed similarly to those who held up Patois burst into Atchafalaya restaurant, robbing the staff and diners. Four days later, there were three men again, this time at the Monkey Hill Bar, a cocktail lounge three blocks from Patois.

The cameras are doing their job. We need to focus on the efforts to prevent the crime from happening.

Nice.

So the actual number was 3, not 2. Carry on.

Are you really going to be nit-picky over the quality of the restaurants? Isn't Uptown the "nice" area of New Orleans?
What about the robbing of 4 patrons that occurred right outside of Commander's Palace some two or three weeks ago?

I'm sure you'll just channel your inner "Davis McAlary" and throw on your vintage Jazz Fest t-shirt and place some Rebirth and just "chalk it up" to living in the Big Easy...

I can't believe that there are still people that look at Metairie like it is a waste land. What is so great about New Orleans these days?
Look I have had a gun put in my ribs and told that I was going to lose my life if I didn't hand over my wallet. I have a friend's brother who was taken to an ATM while the frickers kept his wife at home. They returned home and shot him dead with a shotgun in front of his wife. So I hope you can see where I am coming from..

That's not what you said though.

What about it? You implied that it is some common occurrence. IF you want to keep moving the goalposts to get to a point, knock yourself out.

Every night/weekend tourists are getting mugged and shot? Where are you getting your news from, because that is not accurate.

Horrible. It also stopped when arrests were made.

quote:

They ruthlessly murder a Brinks delivery driver.
Terrible. Also happened at least three times in 6 years when I lived in Houston.

quote:

they even freaking murder an innocent pizza delivery driver! Over what? $20 and a 1990 Corolla?

Also terrible, and unsolved, but I don't think too many tourists are going to be ordering pizza in the hood.

Yes it does and our dipshit mayor has checked out. I know this is the OT, but perspective is a thing to consider.

It's not that at all. There really has been an increase in violence in the past month. It's almost as if the statue removals have emboldened them.

There has always been thug on thug violence; but tourists used to be more safe.

This is what people should really be mad about. New Orleans, since it's inception, has always had bad crime. Probably will. To have a mayor doing what he is doing now is a damn shame though.

Marc Morial was a corrupt bastard who has totally forgotten about this city since he left office. Having said that, when he left office, he had crime "relatively" under control and a lot of the city was in decent shape. He had stopped the bleeding. Even the schools, which the mayor does not control, although they sucked, they were starting to root out the garbage and put them in jail.

Landrieu will leave the city in worse shape than he found it, but because he took down some statues, he is a hero.

but they won't. The strange thing about the NOLA loyalists- and the whole state of Louisiana for that matter- is that no matter what the nature of the criticism, they all go into defensive mode. I don't know why, but most people in this state cannot accept criticism of any kind. They immediately attack the critic or try to marginalize the fault being defined. Definitely helps understand why this place wallows in its state of mediocracy or worse.
