You can't compare New Orleans to Chicago or any other big city crime really. New Orleans is rare for big cities in having the bad areas so close to the main tourist and business areas, you can easily go from one tourist spot to another and walk through some horrible areas in New Orleans. The major crime in Chicago is miles and miles away from the down town area.
It's 10 miles from Wrigley field to the White Sox stadium which is the far out skirts of the South side. It's really 3-5 miles further than that to the prime bad areas of Chicago. In Chicago the crime is miles away where as NO it's blocks. That's a big difference. The City needs to work on separating the two.
I'm not scared to go to NO, but it's also not worth it to go when I have so many other completely safe places.

Probably. If you have some numbers to change my mind, I'm open to them.
We'll just have to disagree. I don't have any numbers and i realize tons of people visit every day without issue but there are far too many articles in the paper to have me believe the unaffected rate is 99.99%. I just simply don't believe it.

Considering all the foot traffic and lack of police resources I'm actually surprised there isn't more crime in the FQ.
The recent uptrend in crime is concerning but it's truly not that bad here man.

It is something different, and she wants to visit her cousin who just moved there. Plus I haven't been to the stockyards so we are going to make a trip of it. I may try to sneak in a trip to Arlington to see a Rangers game if possible.

Ok. It really isnt though. All of my buddies who live in New Orleans and have always defended it even admit that they don't go to the quarter anymore outside of a couple of times a year. Just not worth it.

I'd guess the foot traffic is what is preventing most of it. If that ever starts to cut back is when you can expect more problems.

I have said here many times that I have lived in New Orleans many many years and I have never been a victim of any crime and I do not personally know anybody that had has been effected by any crime in NOLA.

I hope that remains the case to be honest. But one data point in a city full of hundreds of thousands is pretty immaterial to the conversation.

The quarter is cyclical. I'm in the quarter all the time. All throughout it actually. The hyperbole is strong in this thread. I think it's more that people have changed in what they enjoy, like, put up with, etc....

Complete bullshite. That's in the parking lots right by Canal Place, the Aquarium, Woldenberg Park, and a myriad of shops and stores. Those parking lots are filled with nothing but tourist cars. Anyone could've been walking there at that time and that's why those kids picked that area.
Catch some tourists walking back to their car.

You say it isnt but a lot of people i know say it is. I'm glad you have never been mugged but it's not going to sway my opinion.
I grew up in Memphis and never had crime committed on me. But i fully accept that its a very crime-ridden town.
