I'm old enough to remember when 4th of July was considered to be a failure if you didn't finish the day with a gunpowder burn somewhere on your body. My parents attitude was pretty much we don't care if you do something that requires an ambulance but you better not do something that requires a fire engine because if you do after we are done with you you are going to need that ambulance.

When a firecracker went off in your hand, how did your mother treat it? Mine put butter on it. Didn't really help, maybe physiologically, but the pain was still there.
