No cool down room when I was in school. There was a choice between three whacks or 3 days suspension. I took the three whacks because if I had been suspended my folks would have given me a lot more than 3 whacks.

Depending on the circumstance I could see it.

My 7 month old has head butted me hard enough in the nose that I was momentarily stunned and stumbled backwards before catching myself.

If it was a good hard shot in to the nose or temple that the teacher wasn't prepped for I could see it causing an initial disorientation that allowed a violent kid enough time to get in a lot of kicks and blows to the head.

The law is frickED UP for teachers.
This has happened to a few teachers. Kid often gets a slap on the wrist. You can sue the parents in many cases but most of the parents of these kids are usually poor single moms from the ghetto.

More detail in this article. Apparently she's rather petite. The attacker knocked her down and she hit her head, which dazed her. That's when the rest of the attack started. LINK

Yep. And when we did away with corporal punishment, it started going downhill in schools. Many public schools now, even elementary schools are awful for disciplinary issues. Most of this stems from the destruction of the family unit, no father in the home, not adult supervision, and kids just generally running their own lives and simply not caring about consequences. And guess what, there rarely are consequences anymore, which just perpetuates the problem.

Unless this is an elderly or disabled teacher or something, I am lost. Or is this like a Herman Johnson 5 year old or something?

In todays clown world , the teacher would probably be fired if she tried to defend herself or not let the kid “cool down”

Yep, I would’ve gotten way worse at home. Give me the paddling at school.

Probably? Not probably, definitely. It's why they tend to run from the conflict instead of to it. Let the principle deal with it.

Teacher lays a finger on a kid = fired and sued
Kid lays a finger on a teacher = maybe 3 day suspension, then right back in the same classroom. Maybe not even that.

This is unfathomable to process how this can happen.

It’s a special needs student, so could be bigger than normal.

Plus it reads like when he went after her she smacked her head on the wall and gave her a concussion.

How the frick do you let a 5 year old beat you down? Just tell the kid "if you stop I will let you play with my phone". We he stops don't give him the phone.

My wife is a teacher. In Louisiana, if this happened to my wife, she is legally required to not defend herself. If she lays one finger on the student, she gets fired.

The victim, in her late 30s or early 40s, is about 5-foot-4 with a slender frame, Broward Teachers Union President Anna Fusco told NBC News on Monday.

She suffered a concussion and other injuries after the "enraged" special education student, between 50 and 60 pounds, unleashed on the teacher, according to the union chief.

The instructor had been leading an "exceptional student education" class with a "group of children with some type of special needs or special disability, with all kinds of different diagnoses," according to Fusco.

"The way he pounced on her and the way she fell backwards and smacked her head, it was a severe concussion," Fusco said.

"She's got some other bodily injuries from him jumping on her, attacking her, kicking, punching, biting that's going to lead to surgery."

I don’t have kids, is 60 pounds for a 5 year old normal?

Happened today at a local school. 5 year old would not stop hitting and kicking other students in line. Teacher grabbed her to restrain her from kicking kids that were crying and getting hit, screams for help and the principle comes around the corner.

Let's go, kid is okay, teacher is now sent home, might get fired.
