Gainesville Sun

quote:

Christopher Maurice McCallum, 26, of 620 NW 19th Ave. was arrested Tuesday, according to a warrant affidavit filed by the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office.

At issue is a rap posted on McCallum’s Facebook page March 22 that deals with a feud between McCallum, Gainesville men and another rapper. It alludes to a March 23 rap concert by Keyanta Bullard at 8 Seconds, a downtown club.

Also in the song McCallum raps he will “catch you at a Gator game and shoot the whole campus up.”

Violence has occurred in association with other Bullard concerts elsewhere in Florida and with Bullard directly, the report states.

No violence occurred downtown on March 23 that could be connected to the rap.

A warrant was issued for McCallum’s arrest on March 25 and he was located and jailed Tuesday.

So if I write a fictional story or song about something that hasn’t happened, I can be arrested for it?

I'm just not sure where the line is or should be.

If you're some well known rapper on a label who does something like this, is it different than a relatively unknown rapper putting it on his facebook page? I think practically, it probably is. I don't think Big Boi is going to follow through with a threat on his album (if one were hypothetically included). Will some shite rapper in shitville Florida be treated similarly for a threat in a song?

The fact that the media loves to treat anyone who has ever called themselves a rapper as though they're a household name with legitimate entertainment credentials only adds to the confusion of how this should be handled.

no it’s not. Music and rap are forms of speech and should be treated no differently than any other form.

Well, rap shouldn’t be treated like music. Music’s deformed retarded cousin maybe, (looking at you mumble rappers)
