My wife has family in the keys so we go pretty regularly.

It is common knowledge that the beaches suck.

You go to fish, take a boat to the sandbar, drink, and eat good food.

See some historic sites if you’ve never been.

It isn’t a beach town.

I find this interesting. I would have thought that with all them islands there would have been some nice beaches. Then again my knowledge of the keys isn't much. My impression that it was a laidback area with a lot of different ppl kind of like the french quarter. Never knew it was a haven for queers.

I think people think Florida Keys are like beaches. That’s not really it.

The upper keys are for snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, or just totally getting away from it all.

Key West is like a historical town. Museums and such. It’s a coral reef Island, so they really only have a couple beaches that they’ve kind of made.

I think you were ill-informed before you went.

I really liked my trip to Key West, but I like history. So I enjoyed the museums.

We also did a boat ride that took you out to some sandbars and let you swim, Pddle board and kayak and such. That’s the only time I really got in the water.

Terrible beaches, at least in Key West.

It pretty much is.

Duval is a cleaner Bourbon Street.

Same set up though. Bars, restaurants, and strip clubs.

That is also completely true.

It isn’t the worst place to visit if you go fishing or go cruising around. There is good food and historic sites to see.

It isn’t my favorite place in the world, but it is a laid back place to relax when we want to get away.

Hawks Cay is the only place worth staying in the keys.

Yeah sounds like a good idea. Until you see that it's around $900 for a family of four to catch ferry to spend half a day out there

We always take the sea plane, but it adds up when you're taking the kids. There's not real way to do Key West on a budget. The fishing isn't as expensive because you don't go as far out, so less for gas or you can fish in the mangroves. Can snorkel on your own but that's gonna be better by driving to some of the upper keys, but then you have a car rental. The best beach is the one by the Truman Annex. They have a place to get burgers, hot dogs, beer etc. Lots of topless women in thongs, may not be the best option for kids, but generally you can get far enough away. It seems to just be a few foreigners. The sunset festival can be fun for kids and adults. Fewer entertainers this time of year though. I'm drawing a blank on the name of the oyster bar, but it's below the Lobster house on the wharf. Best happy hour food and drink deal. Everything is half price. I didn't take my kids until they were college age.

It’s completely overrun with tourism. I recommend going to State Parks and having some sort of watercraft. An easily towed boat or set of Kayaks are what you need to enjoy yourself anywhere in Florida. E-bikes are also quite fun. We have bike trails in a lot of locations in Florida now.

Key West has practically no beaches. If that’s what you’re looking for, I recommend a trip to St Augustine. We have glorious drive-on beaches 4x4 only. The city is beautiful and lots of fun. Great food and bar scene. Not overrun with gays and weirdos like it is in the Keys.

I also really like the Jupiter area. It’s beautiful there.

Must be a lot more alternative lifestylers on here than I though
This is ignorant. I've been down there with 2 different girlfriends and my wife. Only morons expect a beach on Key West. Head up to Bahia Honda for that. Otherwise you eat, drink, look through shops and go diving, snorkeling or fishing.

You’re doing it wrong.

If in the budget, grab a swanky ABnB a block off Duval with a private courtyard and pool. Then walk about.

As someone also said, grab a charter to a private island. We hit the lobster fishing season last July and after he ran us to them. Was awesome.

I can tell you, the Keys aren’t about beaches and not for those who have a tight budget.

The best beach I ever went to was Playalinda in the Canaveral National Seashore in Titusville. Much better than the crowded Cocoa Beach area.

I’m 62. Acronyms are not my specialty. Don’t be so lazy next time and spell out what you are referring too. I was thinking Pensacola beach not Panama. I lived in Clearwater 77-83 so familiar with Florida.

Key West is basically a safe New Orleans, if you can’t have fun there you suck.

You’re saying the Florida Keys but it sounds like you’re talking about Key West. What other keys did you experience during your trip?

Regarding the beach, it takes less than five minutes of research to find out that the keys are not a beach destination.
