Deputies responding to a disturbance call at a Florida apartment complex burst into the wrong unit and fatally shot a Black U.S. Air Force airman who was home alone when they saw he was armed with a gun, an attorney for the man’s family said Wednesday.

Senior Airman Roger Fortson, 23, who was based at the Special Operations Wing at Hurlburt Field, was in his off-base apartment in Fort Walton Beach when the shooting happened on May 3.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump said in a statement that Fortson was on a Facetime call with a woman at the time of the encounter.

According to Crump, the woman, whom Crump didn’t identify, said Fortson was alone in his apartment when he heard a knock at the door. He asked who was there but didn’t get a response. A few minutes later, Fortson heard a louder knock but didn’t see anyone when he looked through the peephole, Crump said, citing the woman’s account.

The woman said Fortson was concerned and went to retrieve his gun, which Crump said was legally owned.

Fortson died at a hospital, officials said. The deputy involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.

The sheriff’s office said in a statement last week that a deputy responding to a call of a disturbance in progress at the apartment complex reacted in self-defense after encountering an armed man. The office did not offer details on what kind of disturbance deputies were responding to or who called them.

Fortson was assigned to the 4th Special Operations Squadron as a special missions aviator, where one of his roles as a member of the squadron’s AC-130J Ghostrider aircrew was to load the gunship’s 30mm and 105mm cannons during missions.

If only there were some kind of identifier next to the door of the apartment letting the cops know where they were

If Crump is the attorney, then you should probably wait until all the facts come out before passing judgment.

I was about to say the same thing. With him as the attorney, I would withhold judgement.

Sadly, his name involved also makes me even question the validity of the witness statement from the person on the phone.

Somehow this will get turned into a race issue even though it's just idiot cops, massive 4th amendment overreach, and judges rubber stamping warrants allowing for this shite.

Yep. I want just for the airman, I just hate this race hustling, ambulance chasing mofo is involved. It didn't have to be a race issue but it will be now.

They should be charged with manslaughter. Their mistake and their actions caused them to kill a man.

Reading comprehension. No warrant. No 4th Amendment issue. They responded to a call and knocked on the guys door. He answered with a gun in hand.

If they want real change stop making everything a race baiting situation.

So we burst (bust) into a home due to a disturbance call when presumably, no audible disturbance could be heard from outside the door....not to mention it's the wrong damn apartment.

Remember Alton Sterling’s family got millions approved by a majority black counsel and mayor for committing a felony. Let that sink. Paid millions to committ a crime.

I’m sure if these are the facts, this guys family should get paid.

I would argue going to the wrong apartment is definitely a 4th amendment issue, police just don't get to stop and/or harass random individuals. You're right on my warrant comment though.

Actually, the side we are hearing is they knocked twice, never responded to his questions of who it was; then kicked in the door when he had a gun in his hand.

If the statement is accurate, and they did not announce who they were or their presence; they will have an issue. Especially if they really did go to the wrong door. If they have body cam footage showing they announced who they were, had reason to believe it was the correct address, he refused to open, then they kicked in the door and it escalated; it will quickly vanish from the media.

And soon to become a HUGE racial incident. Notice the article emphasized it with a capital B.

I would to, the problem I have is so far I have only seen Crump say it was the wrong apartment Have the police confirmed?

What if he was having an argument on his facetime call and the neighbors called it in because they heard him arguing with a woman?

Only throwing out this speculation because of the need to repeat he was alone and was on a facetime call with a female. It would not be the first time a nosy neighbor called the cops over a heated debate on a phone call.
