The only point I was making is that the owner shares blame for not having control of her dog. The cop didn't jump the back fence. He knocked on the front door. If someone knocks on your front door, it's on you to restrain any animals before you open it.
I agree and my only point was

I don't think the cop should have shot the dog. He's a grown man.

the dog isn't even half way out the door and the cop already has his gun pulled

At least this idiot will lose his job before he shoots a person wrongfully. That is the silver lining here.

Owner and cop were at fault.

Pretty much this.
Owner has responsibility to make sure dog is at least under control when she opens door. What if it's a child outside knocking?
Cop has responsibility to identify himself and maybe ensure the dog is restrained before drawing and shooting. I'm sure the barking was audible from outside the door.

On their private property? That's lunacy.

Being on private property doesn't relieve you of being responsible for your pet.

Lets change it and make it a 12 yr old kid going door to door selling cookies for a fundraiser.
Door opens and the owner cant control the dog and it attacks a kid like this and everyone would scream the dog should be shot.
Would some have the same mentality that if a kid comes on your property "door to door" style they should be subject to attack?

So what if the owner would have immediately pulled a gun and shot the officer, using the same logic that this violent breed of human (a police officer) unloaded his weapon unprompted on my property, killing my pet, so I viewed him as an immediate threat to my own safety and protected myself.
100% justified

I've yet to see a response to the scenario where it's a child knocking as opposed to a police officer. Do we invoke private property rights in the event the hypothetical child is mauled or killed?

Yep. The police should make their own regulation saying that any unrestrained pet, even inside a person's house, is subject to be shot if it approaches the officer.
We have to protect our protectors.
ETA- it should be the homeowner's responsibility to stay clear of the officer's discharging firearm too. It's not the LEO's fault family members or property is in the line of fire.
It's hard to comprehend how you could even think this, then type it, and not say to yourself, "gee, maybe this doesn't make sense."
You should damn sure never have a firearm ever in your life, and should never be put in a position of authority no matter how trivial.
Protect our protectors - you sniveling, moronic, idiot. What do you think all of those laws, the gun, and that badge, and body armor, and the mace, and the radio, and the backup, and the taser are for? Protection is not the absolution of responsibility or the disregard for standards of adult reasoning, or of the moral, ethical, legal, and professional obligations to get your head out of your arse, control your fear, and do your job without jumping at the first opportunity to draw blood.
Nothing is "subject to be shot" just for approaching an officer. The stupidity of this mindset cannot be underestimated. You are a threat to freedom.
Your ETA comment is the dumbest thing I've ever heard in my life. A badge and a gun do not remove one's obligation to use common sense and muzzle discipline. It damn sure does not place the burden of safety on others.
What belies the extreme stupidity of your comments and the abhorrent nature of this officer's action is cowardice - extreme cowardice, compensated for by presumed authority and the inability to accept responsibility no matter how small.
God help this nation if others are as dim and cowardly as you.

2 year wanders into your unfenced backyard and drowns in your pool. Kid's fault right?

And I've yet to see a response to the hypothetical where I walk on your property and shoot your dog because it was barking and making me nervous?

It sucks, but that's the law and why you have liability insurance on your property.

Dog must be under your control at all times whether inside a fence or on a leash. The moment the dog bolts out the door you've lost control of a potentially dangerous animal.
The argument that the cop responded like a bitch is less an argument about legality and more emotional.
