Florida - Middle schoolers plotted armed robbery with homemade guns

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. (Gray News) – Two teenagers allegedly planned to use homemade weapons in an armed robbery attempt, according to Florida law enforcement authorities.

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office and the St. Johns County School District initially received information regarding the two suspects, ages 13 and 14, in April that alleged the boys were communicating on Telegram about using homemade weapons to commit a crime.

Deputies, K-9 and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms agents searched the 14-year-old’s home and found three homemade firearms, explosive materials, makeshift handcuffs, a tactical vest with white supremacy markings, and concerning handwritten notes and diagrams, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives learned through conversations with both teens that they were planning to commit an armed robbery. The sheriff’s office also believes authorities may have stopped a larger violent act from taking place in St. Johns County.

“The magnitude of information at the fingertips of our youth is a concern. Knowing what your children are consuming online and the activities they engage in should be a priority for parents,” St. Johns County Sheriff Robert Hardwick said.

Both boys are charged with conspiracy to commit robbery with a firearm. The 14-year-old, who is in custody at the St. Johns County Jail, faces additional charges that include making or possessing a destructive device firearm and furnishing a firearm to a minor.
