This is the problem. You don't plead with a 10 year old. You tell him what to do and what the consequences will be if he does not comply, and then follow through.

I don’t understand how you let a 10 year old kid do whatever they want. Non of my kids when they were 10 years old, would even think to not buckle up for takeoff.

I can’t think of one time their entire life were they disobeyed me to my face. Not out of fear, but respect and upbringing.

I want to think that this kid is autistic or something and the parents have poor coping skills, but know that threatening to beat the dogshit out of the kid isn't going to work. Maybe he's just an entitled little prick, who knows ....
But a developmental disorder or possibly even mental illness seems more likely to me.

I had this thought as well, but that is still no excuse

we’ve had incidents like this with our autistic daughter

there have been times when we’ve had to pick her up and remove her from the situation, mostly at restaurants

Had that been me with my autistic child; I would have told her that if she did not comply, we’d be forced to get off the airplane and not get to go to wherever and that she would get a spanking, then I would pick her up and start heading towards the plane exit

that would likely have worked on her at 10 years old (she is 13 now); but she’d have been weepy and made a nuisance of herself during the flight (it would have also been obvious to everyone that she was “different”)

if that did not work, we’d have gotten off the plane (in well under an hour & the airline employees would not have had to force that call on me)

then I’d have spanked her in the bathroom of the airport terminal and waited for the next plane

we still have not taken her on an airplane, at 10, this could have happened with us; but PROBABLY wouldn’t, as we would have been prepping her on what to expect on the flight, including how important it is to wear a seatbelt to stay safe — the likelihood is that we’d have had more trouble getting her to unbuckle at flights end

autistic kids can be more difficult to handle, and I get that and know first hand

but that dad is pathetic - with our kid, the threat of a spanking and being forced to leave almost always worked; mostly because she had experienced several times where we actually would leave a restaurant or event and spank her…

threats of consequences never work unless they are followed through on with consistency

While everything you said is 100% correct, and I 100% agree with, you really only needed to say the highlighted parts

Not flying with the Greyhound Bus Crowd anymore.

Trailer trash is flying now

“Kid has rights”

That creaton should have been taken off the plane as well.

That child has no rights until the age of 18.

If I had caused my parents, especially my mother, to get off an airplane. My obituary would have been published the next day.

We had a rule growing up. Embarrass our mama in public, and may God have mercy on you, because she was going to have none.

I pitched a fit in the middle of Woolworth's when I was about 5-6. Right in front of God and everybody, she snatched me up, and gave me one of those arse whippings you remember for life. She didn't just "spank" me. She wore my happy arse out...right there in the middle of the store.

Daddy would just give you 'that look' and you knew your craziness better come to halt.
