Jesus you people are fricked up

I really doubt Desantis, the Florida House, and Florida Senate are going to frick the taxpayers over just to get back at Disney. They know what they are doing. Disney is going to take a hit…… maybe they should have stayed out of the Florida education law debate. Disney does not rule Florida.

Right, I'm curious on the details. As it stands, OPs argument is basically "Ha! Good! This law just saved Disney a bazillion dollars lololol." I'm skeptical, but I'm not read up on the tax status of Disney.

Why not just pass a new tax now?
Posted on 4/21/22 at 10:51 pm to extremetigerfanatic
If this helps Disney, why are they pissed?
Posted on 4/21/22 at 10:52 pm to lsupride87
So now liberals in other states care about local tax payers in Orlando. Lulz

I can't fully believe any argument that implies the special tax status of Disney actually hurt them, which is what is happening when it's claimed that this change helps Disney.

Because saying this is a “tax exempt” issue is as accurate as saying “don’t say gay”
Disney doesn’t have a tax exempt status. They pay 100s of millions in taxes. The just of the reedy creek development is Disney controls their own infrastructure. By removing the exemption, the current bonds fall in the tax payers
You are right it’s more than exemption. It’s their own little fiefdom
quote:
The law created a special taxing district, known as the Reedy Creek Improvement District (RCID) which would have "same authority and responsibility" as a county government, including providing "essential" public services, such as firefighters and police. The RCID can also impose taxes and run government services from that revenue. The law also created two cities, the municipalities of Lake Buena Vista and Bay Lake which are currently within the boundary of Walt Disney World…
The law also states that the governing body of the RCID, the board of supervisors, is chosen by the landowners inside the district, with Disney as the largest landowner in the district. According to Aubrey Jewett, a University of Central Florida political science professor, the law essentially gives Disney the "power of self-government" inside the defined district…
Board members are non-Disney business people from central Florida and must own at least an acre [4,000 m²] in the district." An Office of Program Policy Analysis and Government Accountability report explains the contractual arrangement as follows: "Historically, each board member has been deeded approximately five acres [20,000 m²] of land by an affiliate of the Walt Disney World Co. . . . According to RCID officials, a Walt Disney World Co. affiliate has the exclusive option to purchase land back from board members at any time."
"Disney pays taxes to Reedy Creek, which gives the money straight back to Disney, and the circle is closed”
quote:
But most important is Reedy Creek's ability to collect taxes and issue bonds. For the current fiscal year, the district has a budget of more than $169 million — more than 90 percent of which comes from the collection of property taxes on Disney's real estate.
quote:
Imagine if Disney had to go through its local planning and zoning board to build a new castle. Or if it suddenly had to rely on Orange County, Florida, and other local jurisdictions to pick up its trash.
Or if it could no longer sell its own bonds to build roads in its parks.
Tax Districts like this are needed during development of new areas especially with this area being swap land, but this one in its exact form has gone on to long. It’s also not first time this district has been challenged.
There is a lot Disney will not be able to unilaterally do anymore if this goes through which will offer some motivation to form something a little more accountable.
quote:
On April 19, 2022, Republican Representative Randy Fine and Republican Senator Jennifer Bradley filed identical bills that would dissolve any "special independent district" established before the November 5, 1968 ratification of the Constitution of Florida, with dissolution would occurring on July 1, 2023, while any districts that wanted to be re-established could do so using existing legal procedures.

So how does this hurt all parties exactly? This isn't a gotcha, it's a plea for education. I'd prefer your words, not a quote from a politician, if possible.

Careful. Educate the OP and he’s gonna feel like the fool he is.
Posted on 4/21/22 at 11:01 pm to ell_13
How exactly is that “educating me”? Dallas is reiterating the point I was making. The entire premise of this for a Disney isn’t about taxes. That’s a pimple on their arse. It’s the control that matters for them
Posted on 4/21/22 at 11:01 pm to dallastigers
I'm curious how this will turn out. Disney being in charge of the roads and infrastructure has meant they can control the quality. If the counties are doing a bad job of say, trash pick up along the side of the road or road repairs, do you think Disney is goin to sit idly buy and let people have a dirty or bad experience? Disney is constantly improving the roads as it is.
The control, and how they will work that part out is most interesting to me.

Why is control important, and who fills that void now?
Posted on 4/21/22 at 11:04 pm to lsupride87
You ignored my post on the last page. Disney has been using reedy creek as a tax shelter. They run it as a deficit borrowing money from themselves. It’s a quick and easy way to get things done without using up front capital. You’re a retard for starting this thread with the idea this it’s a”gotcha” for taxpayers. Simply, Disney will just have to pay the bill up front. It looks bad on their accounting and means nothing to the local taxpayer. You’d know this if you read the details.
Posted on 4/21/22 at 11:05 pm to GRTiger
To make it as simple as possible, Disney was their own country run by themselves. They controlled the roads, the median upkeep, trash, etc etc
They didn’t have to deal with govt bullshite to get things done and done the right way . That’s one reason for the most part in the past everything was run so well. The govt didn’t have their greasy fingerprints over it. With this, that goes poof
That’s way over simplified but the just of it

So now the city has to pony up for all that. What does Disney have to pony up for now?
Posted on 4/21/22 at 11:07 pm to lsupride87
I’m a former DVC owner who’s been to Disney 30+ times. I’ve read books on this subject alone. You’re over your head.
