On Wednesday, the Florida Senate voted 23 to 16 to eliminate the Reedy Creek Improvement District, dealing a major blow to Disney and by extension, taxpayers in Central Florida.

The district has about a billion dollars in outstanding bonds that need to be dealt with. That burden, as state lawmakers admitted, will fall on local taxpayers.

Would they not be increasing revenue on property taxes, permit fees, etc?

Because saying this is a “tax exempt” issue is as accurate as saying “don’t say gay”

Disney doesn’t have a tax exempt status. They pay 100s of millions in taxes. The just of the reedy creek development is Disney controls their own infrastructure. By removing the exemption, the current bonds fall in the tax payers

I know nothing about Disney, can they just walk away from the area the bonds control?

Reedy Creek (Disney) is a self-governing special tax district. They have something like a billion in bond obligations. Just because Reedy Creek goes away doesn’t mean the debt magically disappears. It is absorbed by the area where the tax district existed, which is the county. So now those county taxpayers are on the hook.

Doing the right thing is often not easy.

A concept that the pedo groomer crowd is ignorant of.

I find it hard to believe the state doesn’t have some way to offset that.

What I don’t find hard to believe is that article doesn’t even bother to explore that.

It’s a hit piece.

Wouldn’t like a .75% sales tax on everything sold at Disney and some property tax on Disney land take care of that?

Yes, but now that the tax exemption is lifted the district will take in millions in taxes from their newest taxpayer (Disney). It’s a half written article.
