what the heck does the service matter.
Because it should matter if they want to attract and retain customers. Food is very important but in the restaurant business, fast food or otherwise, service is extremely important to people wanting to come there.

Not even close. The owner of a CFA is a glorified manager. They share a significant portion of the profits with the corporation. My understanding is the average CFA cash flows between $150K and $250K. And it's rare to get more than 1 location and nearly impossible to get more than 2.
I'm just looking at what a unit does in sales, I'm not sure on their cost of goods or franchise fees. Im thinking you have to have more locations to equal the sales of one chic fi la. But then again, if you have a very well run McDonald's in a good location, you could kill it.
On another note, McDonald's are open for more hours during the week. So think about that, you have to be open 1 extra day a week and most of them open earlier and close later than chic fi la.

5 guys? The 2 that I have been to are just like mcdonalds and bk with the workers.

True, however I have yet to encounter a "bad" employee at any Chic-fil-A. They always seem so happy and very eager to please.
It's simple really.
Very basic menu.
Staffed appropriately for the rush.
Not open 24 hours a day.
Closed on Sunday.
Closed for holidays.
It plays to a happy work force.

When restaurants have to start putting nutrition value on the menus, I'd be interested to see if places like canes or chic fi la take a hit. People just automatically assume chicken is healthier. Not when it's deep fried. This post was edited on 6/14 at 9:18 am
Chick fil A already has up its nutritional values. It's not great but not terrible either.
Canes doesn't yet because they are actively fighting it. Will eventually happen.

Chick Fil A hires quality people. It's part of what sets them apart.

Average McDonald's does about $2.6M while CFA is around $3M. Fairly close, especially considering McDonald's has 10 times the locations.
And that's the rub. The only way McDonald's can do $2.6M at 15K locations is to have a much wider variety of products. Similar to the jack of all trades and master of none. Leads to a much tougher work environment.

my belief is it starts with management and trickles downhill. Those restaurants clearly put a ton of focus into customer service, therefore, I'm sure its a foundation of their training rather than just learning how to punch a register.

I would have to say training has something to do with it. I personally know how intense the training standard is at Chic-fil-A. They don't mess around, they let one girl go because she didn't smile enough. They said she wasn't giving the right experience. They just hold their employees to a higher standard.

Consider also that most McD these days are 24/7, whereas CFA is open 6 am - midnight 6 days a week.

Chick-Fil-A's Ice-cream machine is never broken

I hear Chick-fil-A is very selective in their hiring. Where as I think the qualification to be hired by BK or McD is basically to be breathing.

Hiring standards and company cultural have a lot to do with it

the only fast food experience that i have found to be consistently competent in the SOUTH is chic fil a. every single time.
all fast food employees, generally speaking, are much better elsewhere (cali and midwest) in my personal experiences.
the difference in SLA and SETX is amazing in itself

Inn-N-Out also has great employees. Similar to Chik-Fil-A in my experience
