First World Problem: Why do websites need passwords anymore?
Posted on 9/18/25 at 11:01 am

Seems like 90% of the times I login to a website and type in my password, I have to check my e-mail, messages or put in a pass code from a separate app I had to download and register for. Even when I click 'remember this device' or 'register this device', I still have to do it every time I login. If this is the new standard, then just do away with passwords in general.

It's 2 factor authentication and it's more secure. The first factor is your password. The second factor is the link or code.
It's not needed for something like posting on TD. But for anything that contains sensitive info (like banking info) it's much safer.

I get this when logging onto my bank, investment accounts, mortgage portal etc.
But 2-3 step verification to order a large meat lovers pizza is fricking insane.

It sucks.
People should be able to opt out of all that.

It's not that simple. Often we (IT pros) are required to enforce MFA for everything or risk failing an audit.

I know what it is, but it's ridiculous and overkill for many of the places I log in to. It should be optional, not mandatory. Let me decide how secure I want my logins to be.

well... it's Mother Fuggin Aggravating. That has to be what MFA stands for, right?

I'd buy a beer for the man who came up with 2-factor authentication. (Not that it's a revolutionary idea)
I've had accounts hacked before, so I'll deal with the extra step needed to keep my shite secure.

Perhaps it's not about the pizza, but about your credit card info, phone number and home address?

Just wait until you have to Duo Mobile verify everything in your company, which adds an app to authenticate, and any number of authenticator apps for so many other sites.

You could not store this info in the account. That is an option.

I just bought a "Windows Hello" compatible webcam thinking I was going to bypass some of the bullshite using biometrics. It works for Windows and maybe Google. That's it. Everyone else requires you save your passkey on another device, so it's a major PITA. I almost don't log into X anymore because I'm tired of having to log in using a secondary device EVERY SINGLE TIME. At some point it's not worth it.

What about youtube? On the app, I just go into the app and I am already logged, but if I am on my PC its different. I did set it up to be a secure log in, its supposed to send me a text when I go to long in, I approve the message and it logs in.. But sometimes it just logs in without sending a message, sometimes I have to get the notification sent 2 or 3 times.
I use face recognition on my PC, I wish that would automatically let me to log into all the sites I have accounts for.

Use a password manager like BitWarden. There are iOS and Android apps, too. I can't tell you what any of my passwords are except for Amazon and the Bitwarden master password.
Part of your issue, at least on mobile, is that developers are essentially forced to push "updates" every two weeks (which may do next to nothing) in order to keep their rankings in the app store. This is responsible for me getting logged out of my radar detector app and I only realize it after I've started driving, etc.
The "register this device" cookie that gets dropped on your system will probably only last for about 30 days.

cool..then allow me to checkout as a guest and save none of that. Some food apps only allow you to place an order from an account.

iPhone automatically giving you the verification code instead of having to type it is amazing though

Passwordless browsing is closer than you think. Once Secure Browser products are more streamlined, mainly next year, this will be more of a thing.
