Welp, I'm obviously not the best with cars. THIS explained a lot. I've had some leaking after a recent oil change... brought it back to 5 min. oil and they blamed it their failure to wipe down the skid plate properly. It's slowed down some, but I thought it may be because they tightened the bolt further. If this is the cause, is this an easy fix of buying a new plug?

It may mean they were simply too lazy to replace the crush washer. Hopefully, they didn't strip the pan threads.

Change it yourself, depending on the car it shouldn't be too difficult. Mine is $30 for 5 Qts of full synthetic, $10 filter, $1 crush washer, and 15-20 minutes of my time.
$20 for an oil change sounds sketchy. Is that for labor only?

No , there isn't anything wrong with that. Just be aware that they aren't making money on the oil change, and they don't intent to make money on the oil change. The money is in nitpicking your vehicle to death , giving you a list of repairs that need to be done and hoping that even 50% of oil change customers will get some of the work done, which is where they will make their money.
Now, bear in mind, most places that do this are not dishonest, they aren't telling you that you need repairs that you don't need done, it's just that in most cases you can either wait, or have the work done somewhere else cheaper.
For example, you get an oil change done, and they make a notation that your power steering rack is leaking and needs replaced. Well , ideally yes it probably does need to be replaced, but in reality it's a minor leak that could either be ignored or simply add some stop leak to the system.

Go to Autozone and they have a container you can buy for like $6. It's very wide mouthed, perfect oil container, holds 2.5 gallons, comes with a lid. simply fill it up and then the next time you go to autozone take the full container with you and they will dispose of the oil for you properly, no charge. Don't be dumping that shite in the trash or down the drain.

You should not be driving if A) you do not know how and when to change the oil in your own vehicle and B) if you can not change a tire on your own vehicle.

Great advise, you just told a car noob to very likely overfill his engine by 1-2 quarts of oil (which may not be the correct weight to begin with). When he drives the oil will become aerated, lose shear strength and grind his engine into shavings. At least the OP is smart enough to know what he doesn't know.

If the pan threads are stripped, do not purchase those oversize bolts to replace your current one. Either you'll have to replace the pan or take the pan off and re-thread it. Just hope they didn't over torque and stripped your pan.

Ive been going to Rapid Lube on Essen for over 20 years and never had an issue. Their pricing is about average.

My dad's auto repair shop doesn't do oil changes specifically because even at $80 on the average oil change he wouldn't be making any money. We even take our own vehicles to the local Jiffy Lube type place. Averages $50-60 depending on oil used.

My 997 TT took 8 quarts of A40 spec synthetic, filter, an O ring, a washer for the crank case and washer for the oil tank. My E46 M3 takes 7 quarts of a specific Castrol formulation, filter and crush washer. Both over $70 in materials at internet prices, significantly more in-town which means the dealership.

Incorrect. You can get 5 qts of Mobil 1 and a Mobile 1 filter for $35 and change all day at Walmart.
I did just that on my mom's 99 Maxima yesterday. Has to be about the easiest car to change the oil in I've ever worked on. The only thing close as easy was my 83 RX7.

If you buy the oil and filter, Jiffy Lube charges like $29 to change the oil using your supplies. I did that on the first oil change for my 2017 GT when I got it to San Jose.

I'm sorry but if you're paying $35 for materials and changing your own oil instead of just paying a professional $50-60 to do it, you simply do not value your own time. Oh you can claim "oh I just like to check my own car out or whatever" but what a load of nonsense. You are either too poor to afford to pay a little extra , or don't value your own time.
Be like someone saying "I cut my own hair, I mean a pair of scissors is $35 and I can use them 20 times , why pay $20 for a haircut? Plus this way I can check out my head and make sure everything is okay" LOL

Actually, it takes me less than ten minutes, and it's a good opportunity for me, a highyly experienced mechanic, to look over my mom's car and make sure everythings OK, so I don't have to worry when I go back to California that she's going to have any issues.

If you were "an experienced mechanic" and had an out of town mom who you were worried about making sure her car was in good shape, you wouldn't do the occasional oil change when you saw her, you wold help her find a trusted place to have her car worked on when need be so that she would KNOW her cat was in good shape without having to wait for you to come visit to make sure
