I wonder if this had happened 2 years earlier, would the City of Saint George have come to fruition. Although I don't live in SG, I have close relatives who do but they are sort of ambivalent over the whole thing.

Louisiana's capital city Baton Rouge will be governed by a Republican mayor for the first time in a generation after political novice and high school football Coach Sid Edwards pulled off a stunning, but resounding upset win and tightened the GOP grip on the state.

“I know a lot of people are in disbelief — none more than me,” said Edwards, the Istrouma High School football coach who hadn't even voted during the past 8 years before his election. “This is a movie. This is God anointed.”

Edwards, 61, defeated incumbent Democratic Mayor Sharon Weston Broome Saturday with 54% of the vote. It was Broome's first defeat in more than three decades of elective service, including the last eight years and two terms as East Baton Rouge's mayor and parish president.

Broome, gracious in defeat, said she will "continue to serve this community.”

Edwards is the first Republican elected to lead Baton Rouge since 2000. Republicans now control every statewide elected office and will lead two of Louisiana's top three cities.

Needs a plan on what he wants to attack and good people around him to delegate to. Can't fix it all in a day, but you can make a pretty damn good plan to.

The SG movement began years ago and culminated in a winning election five years ago.

Broome did nothing to stop St George, her and her patsy who sued along with her just slowed it down. The joke is on her though because the ruling means that the actual incorporation date goes back to the 2019 election result. Broome wasn't smart enough to put the $48 million annual taxes into an escrow of some sort in case she lost. Well she lost and BR owes SG $250 million with interest.

Unfortunately that burden is passed onto Sid but I'm confident he'll happily ink a deal to pay it back and not keep trying to avoid it, like the outgoing administration.

Maybe 8 years ago when Broome was voted in would've changed things... but 2 years ago, no.

Maybe MOVEBR will actually move or shut it down. It has been a complete failure compared to the Green light Plan

He is a good guy. I knew him in high school and graduated with his sister. He loves North BR like no other.

i mean, the only negative thing they could find to say about him was "he hasn't voted in 25 years".

Yes. Although the push for an ISD started before Broome was elected. That was the genesis of the St. George movement and would not have gone away. Sid, as someone who has worked in schools nearly all of his life probably would have had a better perspective in trying to appease the South EBR group's wants.

As happy as I am that Sid was elected, I fear the city of BR is too far gone to be saved. What this result will almost assuredly lead to is groups from BR calling for the end of the City/Parish system so as to make sure people from outside the city of BR can never vote in the BR mayor's race again. The communities outside of BR will be fine with that, and BR itself will continue along its path towards becoming Jackson, MS after this momentary blip.

The city of BR leaders would be smart to work with Sid who really has the potential to be a uniter. But they won't because of their own self-interests.

Republican, Democrat, Green Party, Libertarian, I don't care. I just want someone who will prioritize the good of the City and Parish over Party and/or Self Enrichment.

I lived next to him for 10yrs in Central. Great human! The time him and his wife dedicated to their 2 children with autism is just amazing. He still brings Jack out the DG by the old neighborhood sometimes.
