Talks between St. George and Broome administration off to a rocky start

quote:

St. George spokesman and attorney Drew Murrell, attorney Sheri Morris and Sen. Mack “Bodi” White, R-Central, arrived at City Hall shortly before the 11 a.m. meeting in Broome’s office. They were joined by Metro Council member Dwight Hudson, whose district comprises much of the planned city, and St. George organizer Norman Browning, who arrived a few minutes late.

But the meeting ended less than 45 minutes later, when Murrell, Morris and Browning left in haste, declining to comment. Hudson, who followed, later described the meeting as contentious, largely due to the presence of Broome’s attorney Mary Olive Pierson, who is representing the mayor, in her capacity as a private citizen, in a forthcoming lawsuit challenging the St. George incorporation.

“There was definitely a combative tone from Ms. Pierson, which was unfortunate,” Hudson says. “We were hoping to get a broader discussion about the delivery of some of the parish-wide services, to start laying a framework for a transition district bill. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to that part of the conversation.”

Pierson does not disagree she was combative, saying, “what a shock,” when asked about Hudson’s comments.

What a surprise, they're throwing a tantrum because they lost.

Shocking.

I bet MOP went out of her way to be a royal, condescending arse at the meeting.

Why is SWB suing St George as a private citizen? This is the first I’ve heard of this.

Let darth maul choke on this

*
quote:

The opposition (One Baton Rouge, Better Together) to the City of St. George campaigned on "NO NEW TAXES." It should be obvious post-election their campaign slogan was a canard.

For those subdivisions considering annexing into the City of Baton Rouge, their taxes will immediately increase. Let's assume the EBR Tax Assessor appraised your home at $250,000.

1. Property Tax Increases:
a. City of Baton Rouge = 12.9 mils
b. CATS Tax = 10.6 mils
c. BR Municipal Fire Salaries & Benefits = -6.0 (credit)
d. Total = 17.5 mils
d. Note: No homeowner exemption allowed for city taxes
e. Annual Increase = 25,000 x 0.0175 = $438 per year

2. Gross Receipts Taxes (see page 40 of C-P Op Budget, 5% on Utilities)
a. Electricity & Gas = $200 per month (assumed)
b. Water = $35 per month (assumed)
c. Total = $235 per month
d. Monthly increase = $235 x 0.05 = $11.75
e. Yearly increase = $11.75 x 12 = $141

3. Total Yearly Increase = $538 + $141 = $579

Depending on the EBR Tax Assessor's appraisal of your property, and the average monthly utilities costs -- your taxes will be higher or lower than $579 per year. But in all cases, your taxes will increase immediately.

Because the same statute that allows for unincorporated areas to incorporate allows people from adjacent municipalities to challenge the incorporation.

That said bringing her personal attorney in is a freaking bush league move. What else do you expect from Sharon Winston Broome?

I think most people were expecting a 4 or 5 hr meeting in which they start laying out the ground work for St. George.
