I live in an area of true AP baws and where you have to drive at least a few miles to the nearest fireworks stand. I’m thinking of starting a stand for NYE to see how it goes. My shed is built perfectly for a stand and with just a few minor modifications I could have a very nice setup in it. I know I would at least break even and pretty sure I’d do well enough to turn a profit of at least $3,000. That’s a nice way to pay for Christmas plus have some left over.

Is it worth it though? Anyone here owns stand or two and could provide some insight please?

TIA

Plus whatever you don't sell, you can put in storage for next year

Restrictions here are pretty tight as to where one can be located. Also, all of them are the size of basketball courts. As I see it, they bring in someone and put them in a travel trailer to keep people from stealing everything. I'd be surprised if such a structured setup didn't indicate some sort of organized criminal effort behind the operations.

You want to invite a bunch of poor white trash to come steal explosives off your property? What's the liability gonna do to your insurance costs?

Get 2 or 3 buddies to go in with you and put a tent up in the mall parking lot.

I’ve known two people that owned firework stands. They both were really trashy and lived in trailer parks. For that reason, my interest was never sparked at getting into the industry.

Pretty sure that the people who currently run fireworks stands do all sorts of shady shite to ensure other people can’t just open their own

After freshman year at LaTech in 1982 I worked for the big outfit out of Memphis who set me up in a stand outside a town in MS on the edge of a soybean field alongside a river.

1st event was armed robbery before even opening, had the $100 cashier seed money mostly in change is all. And the idiots had earlier that day 2 of the 3 filled out job apps with their real info.

2nd thing to consider: How's your insurance?
3: Have you got an attorney on retainer, preferably a highly experienced one across a broad range of claims?

There's big rewards but as usual, takes big risk.

So you want to openly invite a bunch of trash to your property.

There are a few people on the OT that give off a clear indication that they are an idiot.. you are one of them. And it’s not just from this thread

More like for the next holiday. July 4th then onto New Year’s so your extra inventory is only out For 6 months.

By the looks of people who set up firework stands it can't be worth it. Good luck though.

There's a local family that has run one here for as long as I've been living here (15yrs). They told me they sold out and had to order another truck load. They are not trashy at all, her husband owns a very successful business.

I think the biggest obstacle to having your own stand is getting the inventory. The big boys buy it directly from China , several hundred thousand dollars at a time. They have many locations to supply and can dictate who does and doesn’t get to buy inventory from them , depending on where your stand is located. Or if not, they can still undercut your prices since they get the fireworks so much cheaper than you can. So you’d be better off going to them , asking if they can set you up with a spot (Location, tent, and fireworks) and you keep a percentage.

I know a couple of families that own stands. You have to be licensed to buy the fireworks from distributor. You also have to get approval from parish and then have insurance. I once was wanting to do the same thing, but once I thought about how many people would be on my property, I passed.

Fireworks are a luxury item purchased without planning, so assume convenience store rules for everything:
The site - if you feel like you have a location that would be good place to put a gas station, then go for it. If not, your site sucks and you should not even consider it again.

People - You will need to assume that people who spend $300 on explosives made in China are the same people who will case your house and steal your copper plumbing. Also assume that you will be robbed at the same rate as convenience stores.

Overhead - unless you are going to do cash only, you will need a way to accept credit cards. (READ “TAXES”). IF your parish allows fireworks sales in your zone, and if you city/township allows it and if your neighborhood allows it, then you must be a certain distance from the roadway, and carry insurance. Your current homeowners will not likely cover any issues that come from running an on site business or that may arise from you saying that the $35,000 of inventory is for personal use. So you can open an LLC or assume that the first person who walks in will “trip” and sue you for your house and land. They may settle out of court for you to swap for their mobile homes.

Lastly, the profit is high if you do all the labor. If you are not willing to work for ~12/hr 24/7 for 1 month a year (2wks at each holiday) then you will either have to pay security, cashier, or grunt workers to do what you cannot.

That’s a lot of trouble if your plan is to only make $3,000. Insurance, permits/licenses, supply, security, staffing, etc

People that make money with fireworks have multiple locations and buy in bulk

I can't see how they stay afloat seeing as how they always have the "buy 1, get 5 free" sales.....
