The Chinese claim to have a carrier killer missile.
I know the design was allegedly built to outwit/evade Aegis and Patriot anti-missile systems, and was primarily meant to take out any other type of missile defense systems, but I thought I had read it was also capable of going after carriers as well.

I had no idea how tumultuous the Japenese rise to power was from within...
Prime ministers getting assasinated and the killers only getting 2-3 months or years in prison....crazy

It just doesn’t seem cost effective anymore.
Just as the swarm of bees (aircraft) and subs is what spelled the demise of the Battleship, it seems that a multitude of Small, cheap (Therefore expendable) and fast craft (whether based on sea or air) could overwhelm a carrier.
Not that any current navy is fielding such a force at the moment, but the podcast got me thinking about the topic.
Drone swarm technology is being developed.

Space is the natural next step but that's costly, time-consuming and of limited use with today's tech (ie: re-supplying after use). I think China is onto something with their extending the projection of power via building artificial islands then building bases on them.

I think carriers are already on the edge of being made obsolete by drone swarm technology and advanced anti capital ship technology.
Post Soviet armed forces, everyone is forced to, if they must, confront the United States asymetrically. The Chinese are well aware of this thus their interest in anti ship missiles, drone and drone swarm tech and hacking.
Now, I think we're still in the lead in all of those areas. But I believe in a conventional fight, we'd take no small amount of losses of ships and lives. We'd prevail but it would come with a cost that would horrify the average American.

Technology is being develop to use naturally occurring microwaves to power an aircraft. The potential is having a fleet of permanently airborne unmanned craft. With this technology, there may be no need for a hive concept (which is an energy and resource efficiency for manned craft). This could enable a different concept - spread that hive out as a blanket to minimize the loss of unmanned craft from outside threats.

How big a craft could be powered in such a method?

I think smaller drone only aircraft carriers would be good

Why not have drone Carriers? If a lot of resources are spent building carriers to carry crews, perhaps eliminate a lot of the need for crew members. Obviously not fully autonomous but surely certain tasks could be automated and remotely controlled.
Although then you run the risk of the carrier itself being hacked.

The purpose of the carrier group is more than just firepower. It's an imposing sight to see so many large ships off your coast and have planes flying overhead. This is all about the intimidation factor. That's why we continue to patrol the western pacific reaches with multiple groups.
No satellite or missile complex is going to replace that.

By the end of WWI, battleships had become so expensive that countries were afraid to put them in harm's way. With the proliferation of cheap and plentiful antiship missiles, the same thing is likely to happen with carrier battle groups. The ability of US carriers to project power after WWII has been due to their being able to operate in a low threat environment. A president who loses a carrier and 5000 sailors on his watch is an president who is going to be impeached or lose his reelection bid.
To answer OP's question, large carriers will be replaced by a distributed network of smaller ships, along with space based weapons systems and hypersonic aircraft that can reach anywhere on the globe in no more than an hour or two.

High altitude/ low earth orbit ramjet style drone swarm carriers. Can be anywhere in the world in a matter of hours after being launched and deliver either muffins, drones, or some combo.
A ramjet that could get across the globe in a few hours, then deploy block 4 tomahawks (with the ability to loiter and change targets mid flight, they're essentially drone missiles) or something similar is basically instant force protection. Biggest issue is having strong enough ECM to prevent targeting and secure frequencies and/ or strong enough transmitters to prevent a baddie from hijacking the drones or blocking out their connection to the carrier or GPS.

I don't think they will be fully replaced but we will see the number of CBG's fall.
A war with Russia/China will be one where the victor will deny the enemy his use of advanced systems through Electronic Warfare. Carriers allow us to continue to fight even if our GPS, communication, and tactical information networks fail.
