If your neighbor put up a fence, why would you also need to put up a fence?

Sounds like your lot just grew 8 inches. Don't put a fence up. Just enjoy his and the added property.
Yeah but I have dogs it's easier to let them out into a fenced yard to play.

Wait, I change my position. Check your local laws on this. If you maintain the property (aka, cut the grass) for a certain amount of time, and your neighbor makes no claim to it, you may then own it.

he told me hat he put his fence 8 inches back onto his property and didn't want my fence to touch his.

Did he say why? Curious what his thought process was

Why put up a fence? You got a free fence and and 8 inches more yard. Buy him a six pack and tell him thanks.

30 year acquisitive prescription. Just mow it and 30 years from now you can show you've maintained it and it's yours. He's an idiot, what's his reasoning?

ETA: that's in Louisiana. If this is another state the time will vary.

There's already a fence. I don't see the issue.

Well, part of the issue is that if he wants to put up a fence, he won't be able to tie it in with the neighbor's without there being a gap.

Build the fence and make him pay for it, since apparently that is a logical solution these days

At this point I would do anything. Just let his fence be your fence. It sounds like he screwed himself.

Maybe I'm an idiot, but what does that have to do with him not putting the fence on the property line and why he doesn't want the fences touching?

Only possible solution:

Build a taller fence with strobe lights pointed at his house and then send a drone in to spy on his wife sunbathing.

Not sure where you live, but here in Chattanooga we have two options.

If you put the fence directly on the property line, it's a party fence and you both have to maintain it.

Or you can put the fence 1' off the line and the other neighbor would also have to put the fence 1' off the property line. You both have to maintain your property in this case.

In your area the code may be 8". Check with your city/parish/county or whatever.
