Seizing tax credits and refunds from low-income people, Yu said, is not financially sound public policy.

Taking out $80,000 in student loans to get a degree in a field where you're only going to make $35,000 a year is not sound financial policy either.

which is why our tax system is absurd

especially when combined with the bullshite negative tax/credits that this lady almost assuredly was relying on

It's just a fact though.

an absurd fact that further expands on the absurdity of this story. hence why i said it has everything (except confirmation of matriculation at a private school)

well she also likely had to pay an attorney to file, which is another negative/cost of that choice

sure, but it appears their parents pay all the bills on time

i said this a few weeks ago but the problem with this coastal leftist culture of the lower/lower-middle class (who these stories pretty much always feature) is that they want to be bohemian without all the negativity that comes with it

hence the comment about her appearance

The fact that these people don't understand that refunds are the government handing you back your own money says a lot

Not always true. While most "refunds" do represent the fact that you paid too much tax up front and are getting a true refund, there are some people who actually have a negative income tax rate, i.e., the IRS is not just refunding all money paid in but actually giving them additional money. For the latter group the "refund" they get actually is sine new money there are given for being poor, having a bunch of kids, etc.

Gotta be a scheme. No way around it.

For some people, doing their own taxes could prove disastrous, and becomes nearly impossible to keep up with along with everything else. If I worked for someone, I'd 100% do my own because the tax software nowadays is super user friendly and concise and thorough, but working for myself, I pay for year round tax services, and even then I still had to pay in over $10,000 this year... AFTER getting back many times over that much 2 years ago.

It's bullchit. Absolute, unadulterated, smothered and covered and mashed into your living room rug, bullchit- just like the name ophelia.

"If the government wants its money, this is not the best way to make that happen," she said. "Taking this money prevents borrowers from being able to go back to work and make money to pay off their loans."

Indeed, Patterson said she can't return to work — she's a writer and performer, until she finds a permanent place to live.

Well, there are plenty of "normal" looking people who are a POS.

In my walk, I've met plenty from both sides. And granted, eccentric behavior can be an obvious sign of instability..but it really just depends on the person.
