They did.
There was a sudden stratospheric warming event in late December. Those tend to disrupt the steady east to west flow of the "polar vortex" and have it be able to dive down into the mid lats. The models started picking up on this polar lobe dropping down early last week, and they basically nailed where the worst was going to end up and how.

I see Chicago will have a high of -14 and low of -24 Wednesday. Last time I went to Chicago, there were homeless everywhere in certain parts. I have to believe this is not going to turn out well for many.

and they didn't want buses out in the pre-dawn hours in the snow... so they went for "nothing"

Can someone help explain this one to me?
not really sure what is going on here. For Baton Rouge, weather.com has it raining and 47 degrees at 3am on the hourly and WAFB has a wintry mix and 35 degrees at 3am.
How can they be forecasting a difference of 12 degrees at that time this close to the event?

Not anywhere close to reliable in situations like this...please do yourself a favor and tune into local meteorologists for your updates.

Yeah these national outlets are spread too thin to address local interests. They might be good for a general road map but you need specifics with these small scale situational events.

Yall might not be used to having the jet stream be a line of demarcation for your weather.
Within just a few miles there will be a significant difference in weather, especially the line between rain, snow and a mix.
Determining where that line will go is very difficult.
Prepare for the worst, hope for the best.

LOL! Does the guy still work in the area? If so I would say find some other local met. We had the same thing happen in 2014 in Bham but you should be able to find some local weather discussion forums as well and many times there are experts who chime in with very realistic scenarios to keep you aware of what might happen through very good modeling even though they can't send this info out to the public "air-waves" for broadcast forecast packages until the event starts to unfold.

They'll decide at 3:30, a robocall will go out at 4:3o that they're paying attention to it, even though the decision was made an hour earlier, and then if they close the robocall will go out at 5:45-6:00 the next morning, after high school kids are already outside waiting on the bus.
