Feb. 7, 1984 - First Man Flies Untethered in Space

Astronaut Bruce McCandless became the first person to fly unteathered in space (allegedly
) on this day in 1984. That has to be one of the gutsiest things someone has ever done.

He passed away just last December, here’s an article on him done after his passing.

NPR had an interview that was really great. I remember him talking about how cold he was during the whole thing.

I don't believe this is true. I believe the Soviets had at least a couple that flew untethered and are still up there.
McCandless was the first guy they recovered after an untethered flight.
