Feb. 7, 1984 - First Man Flies Untethered in Space

Astronaut Bruce McCandless became the first person to fly unteathered in space (allegedly ) on this day in 1984.

That has to be one of the gutsiest things someone has ever done.

Video of Flight

He passed away just last December, here’s an article on him done after his passing.

NPR had an interview that was really great. I remember him talking about how cold he was during the whole thing.

With all due respect, we do not know this for sure. Our ancient ancestors may have been far more advanced than we currently believe them to have been, and they may have traveled into space. (ie- mayans left for another planet)

I don't believe this is true. I believe the Soviets had at least a couple that flew untethered and are still up there.

McCandless was the first guy they recovered after an untethered flight.

I said they were still up there, but they might have been the first to make an "unvehicled" re-entry.

TD (O-T) thread: iconic NASA spacewalker Bruce McCandless - Rest in Peace

Undoubtedly, one of the top five photographs in NASA history:

If you were a child of the 80s or 90s with an inkling of science or space interest, this photo was likely on your bedroom wall or behind the plastic cover of your trapper keeper.
