Got down to about 172 a few years ago and people were asking me if I was sick or had cancer.

because they are used to you being fat, not because you actually looked sick

Bingo. I'm 6' 4" and currently 197 pounds. Everyone in my family is fat- grossly fat.

I used to weigh 260 until about 10 years ago when I decided to do something about it. I was always active, played sports in HS, currently in law enforcement, etc, but just got tired of being chunky. So I lost about 70 pounds in a year.

My family and friends went nuts, especially my obese immediate family. They were worried, thought I had cancer or AIDS. Hell, they even staged a formal intervention, complete with my pastor. But as I've kept the weight off they've learned that this is just who I am and what I look like. I'm "normal" to them now.

ETA: When I was 260 lbs in my 20s, I said the same things every other fat person says:

-My frame is too thick to get under 200 lbs.

-I'm not fat. Sure, I could lose 5-10 lbs but I'm not fat. Please pass the ranch.

-If I lost that much weight I'd be too skinny to have the energy to do my job or enjoy life.

Trust me- life as a leaner, stronger male is infinitely better than going through life as an even moderately fat person. It feels great being able to take your shirt off at the beach without feeling like shite or have girls actually flirt with you every once in a while.

I was also obese at one time and said all those same things. I know for sure they're bullshite now and part of me knew it was bullshite back then.

I’m glad you got through this. My mother has always been really bad about losing weight. One of my sons needed to lose some weight - so he, my husband and I came up with a meal plan - my mom lives with us and she knew what we were doing - so she bought 3 cakes the next day. Yes ‘3’

My older sister was diagnosed with prediabetes and I’m proud of her - she’s really changed her diet and stated exercising and lost 20 lbs right away - my mom ridiculed her for not eating ice cream anymore and says there’s no way she lost that much weight

So I understand what you went through and commend you as well.

Does he look like a cancer patient in that picture? Yes or no.

He does not, but he cut weight to get to that point for a very short time.

If he wanted to get down to a true 155lb weight (not just shedding water weight for a fight weigh-in) he would look much different.

Thanks, much appreciated. Yeah, like smokers or drug users, obese people seem to resent when someone in their circle tries to lose weight and make positive life changes. It's sad that losing weight often means fighting those closest to you that (for whatever the reason) don't seem to want you to succeed.

Good job to your sister. I'm sure that was hard to do with your mom's interference. So much of our eating habits are formed by our parents at an early age. It sucks your mother is trying to sabotage your son and sister. Just have them keep fighting.

The sad part is I believe and preach the overwhelming majority of principles as a collective group ya’ll espouse on here, but ya’ll are blinded by yall’s beliefs to interject nuance or take a different perspective. Simply put I’m not married to my beliefs. Additionally, you all come off as complete douche bags going after anyone when they deviate from the group think you all have created. I do keto, I lift 3 to 5 times a week, ride my road bike on the weekends etc. I do all the same things yall do but don’t become a preachy dick when someone disagrees with me on how I do it. I am willing to listen and possibly learn something. Yes, I am in the 1% as ya’ll put it, on the OT, but since I have disagreed with ya’ll on BMI I must be fat.

Sounds like your Mom’s way of feeling good about herself is to try and pull everyone down to her level. Easier than putting in work to improve herself.

It's pretty frustrating to have obese people with actual diseases like diabetes and hypertension tell you that you look sick all the time.

Or my favorite: "How did you lose the weight?" followed by them slowly backing away when you start talking about healthy eating and exercise instead of some crazy fad diet.

Wife and I have to meet certain health points to get lower rates for our health insurance. BMI yearly physicals and others. Never get 5 points but it does graduate base on fitness.
