It's being called one of the biggest changes to daily syndicated television since Oprah Winfrey ended her talk show. The 25-year run of "Judge Judy" is coming to an end.
Judy Sheindlin is expected to make a formal announcement Monday on "Ellen," according to Variety and other outlets.
Walking away is no small thing. According to Variety, Sheindlin is paid $47 million per year to sit behind the bench, making her one of the highest-paid stars on any TV show. Her show is a ratings bonanza, leading many local television stations which carry it to make it their lead-in to their afternoon or early evening newscasts.
But Sheindlin, 77, reportedly plans to launch a new show called "Judy Justice." Details of that show have not been revealed.
Sheindlin reportedly told Ellen that fans will be able to watch another full year of original "Judge Judy" episodes before it goes to reruns.
Variety reports "Judge Judy" has been the highest-rated court program every year it has been on the air.

She’s a poor. Dr Phil makes $78 million/year.
I will definitely miss Judge Judy.

My thoughts exactly. So she’s a judge getting paid to judge on things it also happens to be on tv.

Are there really enough house wives, welfare recipients and semi-truck wreck victims to really justify either salary?

I was under the impression that all of these cases are fake anyway. Do they judgements actually carry legal weight?

My understanding is that both parties have to agree (I'm sure in writing) that Judge Judy's decision is final. I also believe that the show pays the judgement, and that's why they are limited to $5k max.

So it's basically public arbitration and then they get an appearance fee.

The cases are real. Production plucks them from small claims courts. Judge Judy is basically an arbitrator and the two parties sign a contract beforehand that makes her decision legally binding.

Real. Both parties receive a guaranteed booking fee of $5000. The winning party gets their $5000 + whatever they sued for from the losing party. They usually find people that are being sued in small claims court that do not have the resources to pay if they lose, so the appearance is a way to convince the party suing to appear as well.
