Fans who refer to the team they support as "we" ("We played great defense last night")

Some Steelers' fan called Tim Fletcher's radio show in Shreveport and went on and on with statements such as "we (referring to the Steelers) have a strong offensive line, and "we made a great defensive stand." He referred to the Steelers as "we" at least a dozen times. It was obnoxious.
No, "we" didn't do anything. The Steelers did. "They" did.
I understand if you live in New Orleans and yell out "we won" after a game, or if you yell "we did it" when you are sitting in the stands during a game. But, in a supposedly thought out conversation about an out-of-town team, the use of "we" is annoying.

I say "We" about all of my sports teams (all of whom are outside my city of residence.)

Can't have a team and pay the players without fan support. Plus, players on teams come and go. The fans, who keep the team alive with their money, remain.
But yes, I will concede that some fans really do get a vicarious experience from their sports teams, as if their team's success somehow means that they also win, though they had nothing at all to do with it. Gumps are a perfect example.

Yeah, I'm missing the distinction here.
It is sort of funny to me to hear the bandwagon type fans with no true connection to the pro or college team they are "fans" of use such terms, though. I'm not sure if that's what he's getting at.
