Why did he prefer to stand for said picture? Am I missing something here?

Probably so he could quickly hand the child over to the parents to be reconnected to his breathing apparatus.

Why didn't santa want to hold him sitting down, but would while standing up??

I'm guessing that he thought it would be the fastest way to get him back on his life support

I think he was freaked out by the mom unhooking the kid from a breathing apparatus and stood up to hold him so as to make the whole process go more quickly. Probably the same reason why he passed the child off "quickly" - he wanted to be able to get it back on its respirator as soon as possible. Which is a perfectly natural, even kind and thoughtful response.

The guy playing Santa probably didn't know how exactly to handle the situation, wasn't briefed on what was going to happen, had this shoved on him, and then did what he thought was best in the little time he had to react.

While seemingly an odd thing to complain about, I will cast no judgment on the family without walking a mile in their shoes.
I'm sure they have a lot weighing on them during this Christmas season.

Santa probably saw a sweet deal on a tackle box.

Baby was on a respirator so I don't blame Santa for thinking the photo had to be fast and then return the baby to the parents

This was my first thought as well. Either that or he was terrified that he would hold the baby wrong or do something incorrectly with a baby that probably looks fragile.

Was it the wrong choice, maybe, but it might have been risk management on his part. It is someone else's child.

He probably took the child while he was standing, and wanted to limit movement and time away from his medical devices. I'd be nervous as hell about hurting the child and would want to take a pic and get him back to his mother asap.

No doubt Santa and BPS would have been sued into oblivion if something happened to that child while in Santa's care.

In the article:
quote:

The company offered Self a gift certificate and a one-on-one photo session for Caleb and Santa. Self declined the offer, and instead suggested Bass Pro Shops donate the money to the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation.
frick her. They recognized it was insensitive, made a hell of a generous offer to make good on it, and she told em to frick off. People these days....

I'm curious why you think this incident is thread worthy??

Other than in the title of the USAToday article you linked, there is nothing in the article which shows the family was "outraged."

Their reaction was more of disappointment, not outrage. And the photo that was taken looks pretty good to me.

Bass Pro seems to have done a good job making amends, including giving the parents a written apology, an offer of a gift certificate and the offer of a private photo session with the store's Santa.

If I saw a sick kid hooked up to all that stuff, I'd be in a bit of a hurry to return him as well. The standing vs. sitting part, I don't really get that.
