As much as some people love traveling, others hate it just as much.

My grandmother lived to 85 and only left New Orleans ONCE- a cruise out of New Orleans to Mexico that her cousin forced her to go in in her 60’s. When she got back, she said ‘Never again’. Lol. She never flew ever, and never went any further than Biloxi other than that cruise.

I would argue that travel in today's world would make you more bigoted.

The vast majority of people you see are straight trash.

My dad hasn’t left a three county area for the most part in 35 years.

He retired a few years ago and sold the building his business was in to a guy who turned it into a VRBO with four more or less hotel rooms. My dad was shocked to see he rents them for $100/night. He figured hotel rooms were still like $25/night max.

I bet he hasn’t driven a car over 55 mph since the 80s.

Played the license plate game during our week long trip to Glacier National a couple years ago.

I picked Louisiana and won.

We had all the other 49 states btw

man you have talked about this a couple times on here and the mindset, crazy and mind blowing to me. i thought i was sheltered and limited growing up in a small louisiana town...pretty eye opening hearing stories like yours.

I definitely think I was sheltered in the regard that I didn't know much past my hometown, but I might oversell it a bit.

I went to Disneyworld in 5th grade because my school won some sort of grant program and they were able to get a heavy subsidy. That was really cool, but it was a long bus ride there.

Other than that, I had some cousins in Mississippi and some in Arlington we would visit every few years. When I got to high school I got kind of lucky and made friends with people in town who came from money. That's when I started to realize just how little my family had done. It was all normal until then. I started going to Florida with my girlfriend's family, trips to LSU games, etc. All the "normal" Louisiana stuff that I was never shown as a kid. When I got into the world I had a great desire to leave. My mom couldn't understand it.

I was sheltered for sure, but I did get to see some stuff that I'd imagine kids in even smaller towns never got to see.

While I'm no world wide traveler I do enjoy taking trips here and there. Dated a guy who had only left South Louisiana like 4 times in his life. I was like, are you serious? Has never lived more than 5 miles from his childhood home.

To this day he basically stays within a 15 mile radius. House, work, gym and friends all live close by.

I've lived in 4 different states.

Worked with a woman who would not travel over the Crescent City Bridge by herself. Would only go if her husband could drive her. Lived in St. Bernard Parish her whole life and never drove herself to the Westbank. Not that there is much to do on the Westbank, but still?

I have an aunt who up until maybe 5 years ago had never been to New Orleans despite growing up less than an hour from the city. The farthest she’d gone on vacation was to Biloxi or maybe Orange Beach. She ended up getting a big European vacation as well as visiting Chicago and New York thanks to her grandchildren.

This is a very South Louisiana experience. My dad’s extended family virtually all live within a 10th of a mile from him. I live the furthest away…less than 30 miles. My brothers literally live next door to my parents like “Everybody Loves Raymond”.

A lot of folks in Louisiana really love living here and see little reason to go anywhere else. A lot of folks are also just poor and can’t afford to go anywhere.

In my opinion, Louisiana is a really shitty place to start a road trip from unless you want to go to the beach. Houston is a terrible vacation location, Memphis is meh, at best, Nashville, Atlanta, San Antonio, and Austin are all pretty far.

If you don’t want to go to the beach, is there anything really worth driving to within 6 hrs of Baton Rouge?

Good for them.

In some of these cases, I don't think it's entirely the older generations fault. If they don't want to travel, god bless them. But for many I think it was just not really a consideration. The internet wasn't around so there was no way to know real time what was going on in other places. News was less frequent, and you had to put a lot of trust in journalism. If you didn't look at a map, or you didn't pay attention in school, you may have trouble putting a finger on a city like Las Vegas or Kansas City if you were given a map.

I don't like the idea of forcing anyone to get out of their zone if they don't have that desire. But I do think it's a shame if someone wouldn't mind seeing the world and they feel like it just isn't in the cards for them.

We are all just people. The royal family, The Bushs, Genghis Khan, Ghandi. There is nothing that those people have that you can't have as well. It may take a lot of work and even more luck, but they are flesh and blood just like everyone else. Nobody is special.

once you get into rural America you will notice thats the norm.

My old job was sales and all my accounts were in rural TX and LA

Most of them hated the "city boy" look and have never left the county.

When I was a kid out of NO, we once took a camping trip to the Smokies that ended badly when my mom got sick and had to be hospitalized. I was amazed at the scenery, the only hill I had ever seen was Monkey Hill in Audubon Park.

I never flew until I 20, I was hired by an oil company and they put me in a seaplane to do audit work on the rigs. I leaned to love flying in small planes.

I hired a girl out of high school in Westwego, she has never been more than 20 miles from home. Never crossed the bridge to the east bank.

I worked out of Gonzales for years, it amazed me that many people there had never been to Baton Rouge or New Orleans.

My grandpa doesn’t really leave south texas. He lives in a small town that is decent, although seems to be getting a little worse, and has a ranch about an hour and a half away. If he’s not in either of those places it’s a very rare occasion.

Why would they? Gonzales has a movie theater now. The only reason we ever went to BR as kids was to visit family who lived there, see LSU games, and go to the movies. If their job and their family is all in AP, then they can just shop at Tanger, watch LSU on tv, and see movies at the Malco. No reason to leave the parish unless you want to go to the beach.

Why leave when I have everything I need here in Jeff Davis Parish? Plus I'm scared of people not exactly like me.

I’ll be there next month but I’m flying. I fully understand why anyone from Louisiana would not want to make that drive.
