Reading the airport layover thread someone mentioned they have never flown. Got me thinking. My 81 yo grandmother has only stayed in a hotel room once and it was for a wedding last year. Her and my grandfather never went any where. Small town Louisiana living. Anyone else know of someone who has never done something so common like that?

My 57 year old brother has never flown. He rarely goes anywhere other than work and shopping.

Growing up, we almost never went on vacations. Now that my parents are empty nesting and my dad is retired, they go out of town almost every weekend. Would have been nice to enjoy as a kid.

My grandma was like that. But she had too much to tend to on the farm to travel. It was necessity. They did a lot of weekend camping/hunting/fishing/sports stuff though

I knew several adults that had never even crossed the lake from New Orleans until Katrina forced them to

My Aunt was in her 50’s when she left Louisiana for the first time on an overnight stay. She went to Dallas with my Cousin and stayed a night. Until then she’d never spent a night outside of the state.

My parents never travel. Before my my mom passed, she said she always wanted to see Paris and travel to New England, but she refused to get on a plane or a boat. My dad has visited me in Texas once in the 15 years I’ve been here. He never leaves S Louisiana. We never went on family vacations either when I was growing up. I didn’t start seeing the world until after college

My grandparents traveled all over. Even spent a couple years in Alaska. They took their Airstream everywhere though (Except Europe) because my grandfather preferred home cooking to restaurants. After he passed my grandma declared she was never cooking again. And she didn't.

One of my grandmothers, born and raised in Terrebonne Parish never traveled anywhere outside of southern Louisiana except for going visit her sister in Houston one time. My grandfather was the same way, but a little more adventurous, as he once flew to California to visit family that had moved there from Louisiana. My grandmother did not want to go to California and stayed home.

My mom flew once when she was a very small child in the 60s.

Her next flight was about 2 months ago when she flew up here.

My dad never got on a plane.

My family limited themselves a great deal.

My parents never go anywhere, and never took us anywhere as kids. They took us to San Antonio once when I was in 4th grade. Fun time.

Now, me and my wife try to make a trip a few times a year when our kids are out of school. Gets them out of the house and their minds off the wifi.

actually was really common with NOLA people.

being from Lake Charles and living in BR goign to LSU....i was shocked when i learned this. My GF at the time was from NOLA and it blew my mind.

i didnt consider my family big travelers until i got in college and realized i was wrong. We never went out of country or any of the places in the NE so i always thought we didnt travel much, i was wrong.

I grew up with my grandparents living in Saudi my whole life until high school so i also thought it was pretty normal for extended family to live all over. Was pretty shocking goign to LSU and finding out many people there were the first people in their family to leave their small south louisiana town or first one from a nola family to ever leave the city. still kind of mind blowing.

My in laws never leave their house. They don't go out to eat, don't visit anyone, never go out of town, etc.. Grocery shopping is the only time they leave the house.

I really don't know how they do it.
