My 72 Hours in a Viral Tweet Vortex: A Diary

Basically dude posted a screenshot on Twitter of a fake essay and then marked it up like a professor would.

If you read the paragraph that he posted about Tom and Jerry it's pretty clever. The fact that someone would think it's real, and then try to get someone fired over this says a lot about where were are.

quote:

Last week, I did something a lot of people do every day: I tweeted out a joke. The joke in this case was a photo of a fake college English class essay I typed up about Tom and Jerry, then marked with frustrated red-pen notes and a D grade before tweeting it as though I were the professor at his wit’s end. To be clear, I’m not a college professor — I actually work in IT and am a comedian who performs in New York, presumably for other people who work in IT. But that didn’t stop thousands of people from seeing my tweet and assuming it was real.

quote:

Monday, February 10, 5:39 p.m.: A major account claims what I did was deeply unethical. Considering that I didn’t realize people would believe this was real, I hadn’t realized that this would upset people. After he and several other big accounts realize it’s a spoof, a new debate emerges about whether or not jokes about professors are okay.

quote:

Tuesday, February 11, 10:15 a.m.: My boss is on vacation, and my boss’s boss visits me in my office and asks me if I teach English. I tell him no, and he explains that he had to ask because people are calling him asking him to fire me. I apologize for the disturbance.

quote:

Thursday, February 13, 10 a.m.: My boss arrives from his vacation not knowing anything about my viral tweet. He opens his computer to find 200 emails and calls me into his office. I tell him about my tweet and how it went viral in the past 72 hours. He suggests I not do that again.

Absolutely no chance. We're on a wild ride, baby, and it ain't stopping until the train runs off the tracks or a conductor pulls on the e-brake.

I couldn't imagine actually finding out someone's job, much less trying to get them fired, for a freaking tweet.

Professors are "authority figures" and cannot be questioned or satired. I can almost promise you that individual would say the same thing about whatever politicians she/he likes, but will drop a Drumpf at any point.

The best way to avoid cancel culture is to stay off social media. In real life, people avoid trying to "cancel" you for fear of reprisals.

That's all there is. He only wrote one paragraph.

This is true.

Most of "cancel culture" is done anonymously or from across the country by people that will never meet the person they're trying to destroy.

It's pretty shameful.

frick a Twitter. It’s toxic. I deleted it because it was literally making me very angry every day. I didn’t need that in my life.

"Top Cat, Garfield, Sylvester" These are all famous cats (so?)-- most of them cartoons (they all are)

Wild Coyote (Wile E.)

Some of his "mistakes" are funny.

It's real easy for people to talk shite on the internet. When you call them on it, they act like you're the one with the problem. The internet lets pussies write checks they can't cash irl. I think Ice T said it best:

For some reason, you motherfrickers think this is a game
You think you can say anything you want
And nothing will ever happen to you
You think we live in a new age
But let me tell you it can happen real easy
Don't make me bring the gravity n****

This is lame. I thought it was going to be about Twitter trying to fire the fake Professor who graded so harshly and unprofessionally.

It kind of is. He got thousands of comments, and that type was among them.

Its just bizarre that anyone would get emotional over something like this. Very bizarre. But this is indeed the times that we are in.
