Was the F-14 strictly a Navy bird? Did any other branches have the Tomcat? I've always associated them with the Navy due to Top Gun and then reading through this thread it seems like everyone with any personal experience with them are all Navy guys.

F14 was the navy version of the platform. F15 Eagle was the USAF version.

F15 v F14

This is easier than typing all the shite

It always amazed me just how huge that plane was compared to the F16 or F18.

They both evolved independently from the F-111 platform.

But that wasn’t the question.

Just fricking with ya. I always wondered if their ancestry included the F111.

Really, the upgraded F-15 Strike Eagle is more a cousin to the F-14 than the original F-15 Eagle.

Damn, I didn't realize the F-15 was developed so closely after the F-14. I had no clue the 15 had been around since the 70s and came out of the Air Force FX program.

Learn something new all the time around here.

This seems extremely sketchy.

The Air Force had a couple of them early on for evaluation. They were never deployed as an operational unit. This would have been the "C" model which did not incorporate the Phoenix missile system.
The Air Force was looking for a fighter (F-15) and the F-14 was primarily an interceptor. The Air Force was using the F106 which was still filling that role.
The F-14, coupled with the E-2C Hawkeye was a excellent weapons platform.

Nasa had an F-14 at Dryden and later Pax River, MD for flight characteristics research for spin and recovery for swept wing aircraft.

Also yes....there is no such thing as a Colonel in the US Navy.

Could have been a Marine aviator, one of the Blue Angel F18 Pilots is always a Marine.

I took my L on page 6.

Confused the F-14 and the F-4.

its possible, I knew one guy that was officer, a SEAL, and later went through flight training. There has been a article posted here about a guy that was a SEAL, then became a medical doctor, and is now a astronaut, some people are more motivated than others.

it happens, if the SEAL(officer,) maybe gets some sort of injury that prohibits further sealship(and hasn't already signed a book/movie deal, of course,) and has a decent record they may offer up a few choices, seent it before

Pretty cool that the whole fuselage is a wing. Everything about that bird is cool. One of the last of the specialized planes before we went to the "one tool for every job" approach we seem to take for every piece of equipment these days.
