Dive bars have more personality.

Dive bar make a hell of a lot more sense than a club with a line around the door, 15 dollar cover, and 9 dollar miller lites where you can’t hear yourself think

I do both at times, but dives make more sense

It's for people wanting to drink in a low key, non-pretentious place. I mean sometimes I want a place where I can take my wife out for a nice dinner and an old fashioned....sometimes I just wanna kill sometime with a cheap whiskey and beer back. That, and I've met some of the coolest to talk to bartenders and patrons in dives.

Interesting bonus....by far the best 2 dives bars I've ever been in where Christmas themed...go figure.

I get the concept everyone is describing, and that would be my first instinct. However, those I’ve heard say the phrases are the hipster type telling all their hipster friends like it’s some new trendy hangout.

That’s why I’m confused. You with me now, OT?

ive bar close to my house called “Somewhere Else”. Has dart boards and Friday is karaoke night.

Somewhere Else - They could have easily filmed a scene from "Sex in the City" here. With its posh décor and sexy, dimly-lit interior, Somewhere Else makes for a killer date spot. Located at(redacted) it’s a little classier than the pub down the corner.

I might not exactly call it a dive bar, esp since its located downtown

but see also the Ditch and the Red Rooster,

hold on

are you referring to actual dive bars? or contrived dive bars?

Because hipsters love new bars with a decor budget that artificially ages a space to make it seem divey. Most hipsters are frightened of actual 40-years-in-the-making dive bars

A bar without pretentious people and obscene prices, that has a soul of a neighborhood, and years of character built into it.

This.

The dive bar I frequent down the street from my house is filled on weekday happy hours with construction workers and lower/middle class alcoholics.

Hipsters don't go there.

The kind of place where if I have one beer and need to leave, the bartender just says "just get me next time". The kind of place that when I walk in, they know the beer I want and start pouring it.

Just a bonus that they have unreal chicken gumbo and some solid smoked wings.

ETA:

Owner recently tried to convert their patio to "non-smoking" and put "NO SMOKING" signs all over. That last about 6 hours before the locals just completely ignored it and lit up anyway. Signs were down in a couple days

Sounds like Ice House on Airline. Minus the food comment you made.

They moved to a location by the airport. Across from the Piggly Wiggly.

It’s definitely a dive bar, location wise.

When I lived in LC they had a little dive that had a bell you rang to buy the house a round. As soon as I walked in that bitch I would ring it.

If you have to ask, you'll never know.
I call em "Hole in a Walls"... they few I like are where I grew up, usually see somebody I know. It's a comfortable, real feel, red neck.....
Then again, I don't think myself too good for that scene..
Some might..

I enjoy dive bars because they are usually void of people like you.
