I’d fly. I work in the industry and littles fly all the time. Some travel better than others. Lol. Just make sure to have two bottles made before you board. Feed the munchkin one on the climb up to altitude and the other on the decent to land. That should help alleviate the pressure change and should keep the munchkin from having ear pain.
Also, it may be a good idea to pay for the extra seat, and carry a baby seat that can be buckled into the plane seat. If not, it’s considered a “lap” child and you and the wifey will have to trade out the whole flight. Good luck. And screw anyone that complains. I’ve flown plenty with out of control kids close to me. Ear plugs work wonders.

If she is 6 months old she should be fine being glued to your wife's boob the entire flight

I knew someone who was in this situation and took little goody bags for people immediately around them...it included some candy/treats and a small note of apology (just in case there was crying). I thought it was a pretty cool idea.

you’re about find out real quick how and why parents don’t give much of a shite about bothering others with a crying kid.
It only bothers people who have never had kids.
Sorry, not sorry.

No shite... I used to hate little kids before I had some of my own.

That is a neat idea!

No, a screaming kid next to me on a plane is the big suck.

Book the quickest travel with the fewest number of things that can go wrong (i.e avoid connections if you can).
If your wife is breast feeding travel with a 6 months old is basically a breeze.
A few suggestions:
1. Bring a the baby in a car seat that clicks into the stroller. At that age it may be the only option.
2. Gate check your stroller and car seat. Don’t worry if stroller can’t fit through the X-ray machine. TSA agents will act annoyed but they can separately screen a larger stroller. You can also bring milk through TSA.
3. Buy a seat for the baby and for the baby and car seat to be during the flight.
4. Don’t worry about bringing a back in play or travel crib. Wherever you are going, there will be a company from which you can rent a crib for the week. I’d rather pay the money to rent than lug around any more crap than is necessary.
5. Any adult who is annoyed by your crying 6 months old has clearly never made a women organism. Don’t worry about them.
6. If you are using anything you don’t usually use (umbrella stroller, car seat without a base, etc.) make sure you test everything out before it’s show time.
7. Please don’t drug you baby for your or anyone else’s comfort.

I mean 5 hours is a lot for any kid but try to get a flight where they will be napping a lot of it. At 6 months they should be sleeping in 1.5-2 hours. I flew with mine that age. They did pretty well. Better than a car trip.

Quit overthinking it baw.
Babies cry. The only time I've seen people get angry about a baby crying on a flight is when the parents didn't seem to care and did nothing to stop the crying.
As long as you are actively trying to calm/stop the crying people don't seem to mind.

It’s okay man. Just buy 3 seats in a row together. What really gets annoying is the people that sit middle seat with an infant.

Worse flight of my life was leaving my home going back to Houston because my being at my job was a necessity. My Father was dying of lung cancer and he screamed for the last two days I was home.
Seat on plane: a woman and baby were in back of me and the child was screaming before we took off. My tears started and I explained and asked her if there was something she could do.
She called the stewardess, explained, that the stewardess moved me to first class. The child screaming the three hours in the air, but it was distant.

You’re going to make everyone else on the planes flight considerably less enjoyable. You’re an a-hole
